Summary

This position is located within the Laundry/Linen department of the Environmental Management Service at the Fargo VA Health Care System. The position operates various machines such as industrial sewing machines, programmable embroidery machines, microcomputer controlled barcoding machine, button attaching machine, snap fastening machine and hot patch machine.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Loads linen carts with linen items to be delivered to using area; Delivers linen items to using areas using established PAR level; Alters or mends uniforms to include making alterations in dress apparel; Repairs garments and work clothes where repair involves judgment in matching colors, sizes, or replacement parts; Performs difficult sewing techniques; Operates buttonhole machine; Manages the ordering, storing, issuing and inventory of uniforms in accordance with VA and local policy and maintains necessary records; Performs hemming of press covers and takes in seam allowances; Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 7:00AM - 3:30PM Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): ???????Not approved Requirements

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Sewing Machine Operator stands and walks continuously on hard surfaces. The work involves repeatedly handling light weight items up 25 pounds and occasionally items up to 45 pounds. Incumbent will push/pull linen carts up to 1000 pounds. Incumbent must also be on his/her feet for long periods while marking uniforms/ linens. Duties require sitting for extended periods performing continuous and repetitive movement with the arms, hands and fingers when placing and holding items in position for sewing or marking. Work is performed inside well lighted and ventilated areas. Incumbent is subject to possible needle punctures and minor thread cuts. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
