Position Description:

The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for two full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professors in Rhetoric and Writing Studies, to begin 9/1/2027.

About the College:

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College has more than 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student to faculty ratio.

About the Department/School/Area:

The Department of English is a dynamic and interdisciplinary department with 45 tenure-line faculty and undergraduate and graduate degree programs in English and in Technical Communication and Rhetoric. Tenure-line faculty in the department teach a 2/2 at both the undergraduate and graduate level, in onsite, hybrid, and online modalities. The Technical Communication and Rhetoric program offers a BA, MA, and PhD in onsite, hybrid, and online delivery modalities. We also offer graduate certificates in Grants & Proposals and in Teaching Technical Communication. With around 120 students in our robust graduate program, our 14 faculty have opportunities to teach graduate courses in our areas of interest. Our program affords excellent facilities, including communication-rich classrooms, and opportunities to conduct research through the User Experience Lab, the Media Lab, and the Letterpress Studio. Major/Essential Functions:

In line with TTU’s strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

As a faculty member in the Department of English, you will be expected to:

  1. Contribute to the teaching mission of the department

  2. Mentor graduate students

  3. Develop a record of peer-reviewed/funded research

  4. Provide service to the department, college, university, and profession

Organization:

Faculty Qualifications:

  1. PhD in Rhetoric and Writing Studies, Technical Communication, English, or a related field by time of hire

  2. At least 2 years of demonstrated record of effectiveness as a teacher at the college level (experience as a graduate student counts)

  3. A research and teaching specialization in rhetoric and writing studies

  4. A record of peer-reviewed publication that has contributed to the discipline and/or a research and publishing agenda that clearly demonstrates promise in the field

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  1. Applicants with research and teaching specializations in rhetoric of technology, digital rhetoric, writing pedagogy, community literacy, or writing program administration

  2. Applicants with administrative experience in program, department, college, university, and/or professional levels

  3. Applicants with 2 years of online teaching experience

  4. Applicants with a record of scholarship supported by funding as evidenced by internal and/or external grants
