We are seeking a senior-level Legacy Application Support Engineer to own the day-to-day support, maintenance, enhancement, and long-term stability of a business-critical Freight Bill Audit and Payment (FBAP) application. This role supports a mature transaction-processing environment built on COBOL and OpenVMS and serves as a key technical resource for troubleshooting complex production issues, performing root-cause analysis, and ensuring operational continuity.

The ideal candidate is passionate about supporting and modernizing legacy systems, enjoys unraveling complex technical challenges, and is comfortable working in environments where documentation may be limited. This position combines application support, database administration, incident management, development, and knowledge-transfer responsibilities. The individual will act as a technical bridge between business users, developers, infrastructure teams, and support organizations to ensure the FBAP platform continues to meet critical business needs.

Success in this role requires strong analytical problem-solving skills, experience supporting legacy applications in production environments, and the ability to document processes, capture institutional knowledge, and drive continuous improvement within a highly visible and business-critical system. Perform root-cause analysis and implement long-term corrective actions. Support database administration activities, data integrity, and application performance. Document undocumented processes, application workflows, and operational procedures. Partner with business stakeholders to understand issues, requirements, and system impacts. Coordinate with development, infrastructure, and support teams to ensure system availability and reliability. Facilitate knowledge transfer and serve as a subject matter expert for the application and supporting processes.

Skills and Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience supporting business-critical enterprise applications in production environments
  • Strong Database Administration background
  • Hands-on experience supporting COBOL/OpenVMS/VAX or comparable legacy environments
  • Production troubleshooting and incident support experience
  • Experience supporting mature or business-critical legacy applications
  • Strong root-cause investigation skills
  • Ability to analyze unfamiliar legacy systems and document tribal knowledge
  • Experience working with developers, application support teams, and business stakeholders
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • Ability to independently own problems through investigation, resolution, and documentation
  • Experience supporting freight, billing, payment, financial, or other transaction-heavy applications
  • Experience working in environments containing legacy batch processing
  • Experience modernizing or transitioning legacy platforms
  • Experience participating in knowledge-transfer and SME transition efforts
