Job Summary and Qualifications
The NICU dietitian functions within the multidisciplinary team to provide nutritional care for all infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This includes nutrition assessment and intervention, education of staff and families, development of policies and procedures, participation in data collection projects, and serving as a consultant to the entire healthcare team.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Participates in direct patient care by providing medical nutrition therapy which includes
-
Assess patient nutritional needs. Screens patients at risk. Accepts referrals from clinical assistants, clerks, nurses and physicians for patients at risk. Obtains nutritional histories as appropriate. Recommends calorie counts as appropriate.

Able to make appropriate nutritional assessments to all age groups.

Interprets, negotiates, calculates, and executes physician orders for modified diets.

Develops and implements nutrition care plans.

Provides written and verbal education to patients and families on nutritional needs as ordered by MD, or other members of the hospital staff, on individual basis or in classes. Recommends outpatient education/follow-up as appropriate.

Records and documents appropriate information in meditech and in patient medical records. Accurately processes and records patient charges for nutrition services.

Assesses nutritional status and requirements of high-risk NICU infants. Develops and implements nutritional interventions based on medical and nutritional condition, in collaboration with the medical team.

Monitors patient response to medical nutrition therapy in the NICU. Adjusts nutritional interventions, as needed based on monitoring parameters.

Attends weekly interdisciplinary rounds, presenting appropriate patient data and recommendations to the medical team.

Develops and implements standards of care for the NICU to ensure provision of optimal nutrition care

Develops and implements policies and procedures relating to feeding practices.

Develops and conducts professional education for nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, dietetic interns and students and other health care professionals involved in the care of high-risk newborns.

Participates in data collection and analysis for quality improvement projects as directed by NICU leadership.

Possesses thorough and current knowledge of theory and practices of nutritional care.

Communicates and cooperates with all hospital personnel to achieve the overall objectives of the Food service department.

Communicates with the Food & Nutrition Manager on a daily basis regarding work completion and any concerns that arise.

Responsible for good working relationships with the unit clerks and nursing personnel.

Communicates necessary information to clinical staff members and follows appropriate channels of communication.

Communicates with food services staff and supervisors to assure all patients receive the diet order and tray prescribed.

Demonstrates ability to accept and adapt to new ideas and to accept constructive criticism.

Works as a responsible member of the health care team maintaining a professional working relationship with all other team members

Performs miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

Assists in covering the diet office as needed.

Assigned duties are enthusiastically completed as designated and in a timely manner.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
-
1-3 Years related clinical experience in neonatal nutrition
-
Successful completion of AND approved dietetic internship or Coordinated Undergaduate Program
EDUCATION REQUIRED
- Bachelor's Degree: Nutrition
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Current Licensed Dietitian by the State of Texas Required
Current Registered Dietitian license by Commission on Dietetic Registration Required
