Environmental Compliance Specialist – Mobile Maintenance

Penske Transportation Solutions is looking for a driven environmental professional to lead the development of compliance programs for nationwide new product offerings and oversee the environmental compliance at multiple locations.

Specifically, this role will lead the evaluation of maintenance and operational activities, identification of environmental risks and regulatory requirements, and development of practical and consistent procedures to be implemented across multiple states and operating environments. This position will be required to work closely with our operations and maintenance teams to develop, implement, and monitor repeatable and reliable solutions to complex regulatory and operational challenges.

This role serves as the primary environmental resource for operational leaders, managers, technicians, and maintenance employees; and interacts with customers, federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. The position is field based, reports to the Manager, Field Environmental Compliance and is part of the corporate environmental team supporting Penske Transportation Solutions.

Nationwide travel up to 70% of the time is required. Travel will include frequent overnight and multi-day trips to operational and customer locations throughout the United States and Canada. Travel schedules and destinations will be set by prioritization of regulatory and operational needs. A company service vehicle is provided for this role.

Major Responsibilities:

The Field Environmental Compliance Specialist major responsibilities include:

• Evaluating new product offerings related to delivering fleet service and repair to identify environmental risks, regulatory requirements, operational challenges, and apply pragmatic, measurable, and consistent solutions and programs.

• Developing, implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving environmental compliance programs, procedures, and operating standards for new product offerings and Penske field locations. This will include standardized procedures, recordkeeping, on-site inspections, and training programs.

• Visiting field and customer locations to evaluate environmental compliance, perform audits, provide on-site guidance and training; help operational leaders address identified concerns in a timely manner; and attend and support environmental inspections conducted by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies

• Working with field operational leaders, technicians, and maintenance employees; internal corporate departments; federal, state, and local regulatory agencies; contractors, service providers, and environmental consultants; and customers to develop practical solutions to complex regulatory and operational challenges.

• Researching, interpreting, and communicating environmental requirements for operations across multiple states and regulatory jurisdictions.

• Maintaining accurate records and monitor and communicate program performance, identifying recurring compliance trends, and recommending improvements that can be applied across the nationwide network.

• Performing additional environmental projects and related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Occupational or Industrial Hygiene, Safety, or a related field.

• At least three years of environmental compliance experience, preferably supporting multiple locations, vehicle maintenance, transportation, fleet services, or other field-based operations.

• Strong working knowledge of federal and state environmental requirements involving hazardous waste, hazardous materials, storage tanks, stormwater, wastewater, air emissions, regulatory inspections, corrective actions, and facility closures with the ability to research, understand, and apply environmental requirements across multiple states and regulatory jurisdictions.

• Ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical procedures that can be successfully followed by field and maintenance teams.

• Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with operational teams, maintenance employees, vendors, consultants, and regulators.

• Ability to work independently while traveling and supporting operations across a large geographic area.

• Ability and willingness to travel nationwide up to 70% of the time, including frequent overnight and multi-day travel.

• Flexibility to adjust travel schedules and destinations based on changing operational and program needs.

• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Experience with environmental, health, and safety data-management systems is preferred.

• Experience supporting new product development, field service, and/or maintenance facilities is preferred.

• Professional certifications are preferred, including Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Professional Engineer, Professional Geologist, Registered Environmental Manager, or Registered Environmental Professional.

• Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is preferred.

• Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
