Full job description

Paralegal, Legal Services

Help build the legal function behind a growing public utility.

OPPD is looking for an experienced Paralegal, Legal Services professional to join our developing in-house Legal team. This role will work across a broad range of legal matters and provide hands-on support to attorneys, business partners, leadership, and the Board.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, takes ownership of their work, and can move comfortably between legal research, document management, litigation support, regulatory matters, governance, and day-to-day legal operations.

We're looking for someone who can independently manage responsibilities with accuracy and sound judgment, collaborate effectively across teams, and consistently deliver reliable, high-quality work that supports the objectives of OPPD's Legal department.

What You'll Do

As a Paralegal, Legal Services, you'll:

  • Manage legal document intake and response, including subpoenas, summonses, records requests, and other legal documents, ensuring matters are prioritized and handled accurately, securely, and on time.

  • Review and steward legal documentation, helping ensure outgoing materials are complete, accurate, and consistent with established standards.

  • Conduct legal research and prepare summaries, memoranda, and other materials that support attorney analysis and decision-making.

  • Assist with drafting and proofreading legal correspondence, agreements, filings, and other matter-related documents.

  • Support litigation and claims, including organizing case files, assisting with discovery, facilitating legal holds, and coordinating document collection with internal stakeholders.

  • Serve as a key liaison among internal business areas, attorneys, outside counsel, and other legal entities to keep matters moving and information flowing.

  • Support legal operations and compliance, including monitoring legal and regulatory developments that affect utility operations.

  • Assist with Board governance activities, including logistics, documentation, corporate records, and communication between Legal leadership and Board members.

  • Help improve legal workflows, documentation practices, and processes as OPPD continues building its in-house Legal function.

The Background That Will Help You Succeed

Because this role supports a broad range of legal matters, experience working in a professional legal environment and managing multiple priorities will be especially valuable.

Relevant background may include:

  • Paralegal experience supporting multiple attorneys and working across more than one practice area.

  • Legal research, document management, contract management, litigation support, or legal-operations experience.

  • Experience balancing multiple matters and deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and organization.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience handling privileged, confidential, or otherwise sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment.

  • Familiarity with legal research tools, document-management platforms, contract-management systems, or similar legal technology.

An associate or bachelor's degree may also align well with the scope of this position.

Experience That Could Be Especially Valuable

Experience in any of the following areas would be beneficial:

  • Electric utilities, energy, public power, or another highly regulated industry.

  • Regulatory or compliance-related legal work.

  • FERC, NERC, public-power regulation, or related utility requirements.

  • Nebraska public meetings, public records requirements, or Board/governance support.

  • Supporting complex litigation, discovery, legal holds, or outside counsel.

  • Helping establish or improve legal processes, systems, and workflows.

You do not need to check every one of these boxes to be considered. We're interested in candidates who bring strong transferable legal experience, sound judgment, and the ability to learn a complex organization.

What Success Looks Like

You'll be someone the Legal team can rely on to take ownership of matters, keep deadlines and documentation organized, communicate professionally with a wide range of partners, and recognize when something needs attention.

You'll also have an opportunity to help shape how OPPD's growing in-house Legal function operates, rather than simply stepping into a process that has looked the same for years.

Why OPPD?

OPPD is in an exciting period of growth and change, and our in-house Legal function is growing along with it. You'll have the opportunity to work on meaningful legal and regulatory matters that support the operation of a publicly owned electric utility and the communities we serve.

If you enjoy complex legal work, variety, collaboration, and the opportunity to help build strong processes from the ground up, we'd like to hear from you.
