Description

The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Recreation Coordinator with the Recreation Department. This position provides diverse recreation services that meet the needs and desires of residents of Garden City. Partners with others to ensure quality services are delivered in an efficient and effective manner.

Examples of Duties

Supervisory Status:

May hire, evaluate, and supervise employees in positions including but not limited to lifeguards, officials, instructors, personal trainers, and special events liaisons. Exercises significant, independent judgement over procurement, program and event development, customer engagement, and facilitation decisions.

  • Assists with the method, dissemination, and collection of community input for programs, services, activities, special events, and facility development.

  • Assists with programs, services, activities, and special event advertising.

  • Develops, coordinates, schedules, implements, supervises, and evaluates a variety of recreational programs, including special events and facilities.

  • Works with recreation staff to provide recreation activities, programs, and services that meet the diverse wants and needs of the Garden City citizens.

  • Evaluates assigned areas of the recreation programs and recommends areas for improvement.

  • Maintains related records and statistics for programs and personnel.

  • Supervises and/or instructs designated recreation classes according to program curriculum and philosophy and modifies it according to participant skill and ability level.

  • Prepares program supplies and materials, equipment, first aid kits, and other necessary items.

  • Supervises opening and closing of recreation facilities as required and supervises facilities by enforcing program and facilities’ rules, regulations, and procedures.

  • Takes proper safety precautions and uses safety equipment to ensure the safety of all participants, volunteers, and employees.

  • Assists with hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating and supervising staff; assuming duties of direct reports as needed.

  • Inspects facilities daily for cleanliness and safety; assists with daily/weekly cleaning.

  • Exercises good stewardship over division resources; creates cost analysis report and recommendations for cost savings.

  • Stays within budget limitations.

  • Assists with annual budget preparations.

  • Works to develop community partners, sponsors, and donors. Also, searches for grants to offset program costs.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill required in creating, planning, and implementing recreational programming. Must possess general knowledge of a variety of recreational activities and equipment required. First Aid, CPR, and AED training is required. Must be able to effectively communicate and engage patrons, demonstrating excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills. Excellent organizational skills.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office products suite and ability to learn My Rec software, as well as other City utilized software.

Education, Certification and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in recreation, physical education, fitness, sports management, or a closely related field. Applicants who can demonstrate an equivalent combination of experience and training may also be considered.

Supplemental Information

Environment: While part of work is conducted in a well-ventilated, temperature-controlled office environment, some work is conducted outdoors and is subject to a variety of weather conditions.

Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds. Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time, twist, kneel, bend, push, and pull.
