Full job description
Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) Burlingame, CA (remote or hybrid) | Full time | Reports to the CEO
ABOUT NGPF Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) is a national nonprofit on a mission to ensure every high school student graduates with the knowledge and skills to manage their money. We provide a complete personal finance curriculum and professional development for teachers at no cost, reaching more than 140,000 educators and roughly five million students each year. Our team of about 25 works from our Burlingame headquarters and remotely across the country.
NGPF is financially strong, with a $40 million operating reserve, clean audits, and a small, senior team.
THE ROLE You will run the finance, people, and administrative side of NGPF. This is not a bookkeeping job. An outside accounting firm has kept our books for years and does it well. Your job is to manage that relationship, make sure the numbers are right and on time, and be the person our auditors, lawyers, board committees, and staff come to with anything involving money, compliance, or HR.
You will be the first person in this role. Most of these responsibilities currently sit with the CEO and are ready for a dedicated owner. You will take them on, put good routines in place, and give the leadership team more room to focus on the mission.
WHAT YOU WILL DO Finance (about 60 percent)
- Manage our outside accounting firm and make sure the monthly close happens on time and the books are clean.
- Lead our annual audit and Form 990. You are the auditors' main contact and you get them what they need.
- Build the annual budget with the CEO, keep the forecast current, and prepare monthly financials with a short plain-English summary for leadership and the board Finance Committee.
- Keep track of restricted grants, including one where NGPF serves as fiscal sponsor, so that every funder report ties to our books.
- Handle bank and investment account reporting and cash planning with the CEO and Finance Committee.
- Oversee the books and filings for our small affiliated advocacy organization, the NGPF Mission 2030 Fund.
- Support the board's Finance Committee and Audit and Compliance Committee with agendas, materials, and follow-up.
People and HR administration (about 30 percent)
- Run payroll and benefits through our PEO (TriNet), including new hire setup, departures, pay changes, and open enrollment.
- Administer our 401(k) plan and answer employee questions about it.
- Keep our annual performance review and compensation cycle on schedule.
- Keep the employee handbook current and be the first call for staff questions about pay, benefits, leave, and policy.
- Support hiring with offer letters, background checks, and a smooth first week for new team members.
Compliance and administration (about 10 percent)
- Keep us in good standing: state fundraising registrations, lobbying registrations, insurance renewals, and the board policies that need an annual look.
- Manage vendor contracts, software subscriptions, and renewals, and keep our administrative logins organized and secure.
- Oversee the Burlingame office, working with our office coordinator on the day to day.
- Be the internal point of contact for our outside lawyers on routine contracts and questions.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Seven or more years in nonprofit finance and operations, including several years as the person responsible for the annual audit.
- You have managed an outside accountant or a small finance team, and you know the difference between doing the books and being responsible for them.
- Experience running payroll and benefits through a PEO such as TriNet, Justworks, or Gusto.
- Comfortable tracking restricted grants and reporting to multiple funders.
- You like building good systems. You have set up or cleaned up tools like Ramp, QuickBooks Online, or an HR platform, and you already use AI tools in your daily work.
- Direct, organized, and happy in a small team where you sometimes roll up your sleeves.
- A CPA, CNAP, or MBA is a plus, not a requirement.
JOB DETAILS The salary range for this role is $115,000 to $135,000, commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package includes, but is not limited to: health insurance, 401(k) matching contribution, 18 paid vacation days (on top of 12 company-wide holidays), 12 weeks of paid parental leave, and various additional benefits.
Job location: Remote or Hybrid. NGPF has an office in Burlingame, CA. If you are located within 50 miles of Burlingame, you will be expected to work in a hybrid capacity with two in-office days per week. Candidates outside of this area will work fully remote. Reports to: CEO
