Job Description

Bioengineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Laboratory Coordinator Lead for one year to join their team.

About this opportunity

The Temporary Laboratory Coordinator Lead supports the Facilities Manager in the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and safety oversight of instructional laboratory spaces. This role provides hands-on coordination of lab supplies, equipment upkeep, technical support, and building logistics, ensuring labs run smoothly and safely for faculty and students. The Laboratory Coordinator Lead works under the direction of the Instructional Laboratory Manager, executing established procedures and assisting in the development of new processes as lab and instructional needs evolve.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Lab Support & Safety Compliance (50%)

  • Assist the Instructional Laboratory Manager in developing, reviewing, and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lab activities, incorporating feedback from instructors and observations of daily lab operations.

  • Support the implementation of the lab instrument maintenance schedule, performing routine checks, documenting equipment status, and flagging issues that require repair, calibration, or replacement.

  • Provide day-to-day technical support to instructors and students on the safe and proper use of lab instruments, materials, and specialized equipment, including electronic test equipment, prototyping tools, chemical fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, chemical reagents, and biohazardous materials.

  • Assist with training sessions for instructors and students on lab safety procedures and equipment use, under the guidance of the Instructional Laboratory Manager.

  • Maintain accurate inventory records of lab supplies and parts, track usage, and notify the Instructional Laboratory Manager when reorders are needed.

  • Support cost-effective procurement by researching vendor pricing and preparing purchase requests for review.

  • Assist with the proper disposal of used equipment and supplies in compliance with institutional waste-handling procedures.

  • Help gather information on lab needs from instructors and students to inform maintenance, upgrade, and equipment replacement budget planning.

Building Operations (30%)

  • Support administration of access systems for secured spaces in the Foege building, including keycard access, hard keys, and keypad locks, processing access requests and monitoring compliance.

  • Coordinate logistics for surplus equipment pickups and laundry services for research and instructional labs as requested by department personnel.

  • Assist in maintaining reliable processes for mail and package delivery to Foege building offices and faculty labs.

  • Support venue operations for Foege building spaces, including processing event and access approval requests as directed.

  • Coordinate maintenance and work requests with facilities and external contractors.

Building Logistics Support (20%)

  • Coordinate logistics for lab relocations, including scheduling move timelines with movers, facilities staff, and affected instructors/researchers to minimize disruption to instructional and research activities.

  • Conduct pre-move inventory and condition assessments of lab equipment, instruments, and supplies to ensure accurate tracking and identify any items requiring special handling (e.g., calibrated instruments, hazardous materials).

  • Develop and implement safe packing, transport, and handling procedures for sensitive, fragile, or hazardous lab equipment and materials in compliance with institutional chemical/biological/radiation safety policies.

  • Coordinate decommissioning, disconnection, and reconnection of lab equipment (e.g., fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, gas lines, electrical systems) with facilities, EH&S, and vendor technicians as needed.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between instructors, lab staff, movers, and facilities/building management before, during, and after the move to ensure clear communication and timely issue resolution.

  • Ensure required lab surveys and decontamination procedures are completed prior to relocation and reopening. Maintain documentation of moveout activities and ensure required forms and notifications are completed and posted as applicable.

  • Update lab inventory records, floor plans, and equipment location logs post-move to reflect the new lab configuration.

  • Verify that all instruments and safety equipment are properly recalibrated, tested, and operational in the new space before labs resume normal activity.

  • Manage disposal or surplus of equipment/materials not relocated, ensuring compliance with institutional surplus and waste-disposal procedures.

  • Coordinate access and update signage for the new lab space prior to reopening.
