Technical Lead / Chief Security Architect / Engineer
Summary
Title:Technical Lead / Chief Security Architect / Engineer
ID:547
Department:Cybersecurity
Location:Remote
Description
Technical Lead / Chief Security Architect / Engineer Excentium, Inc. is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) that provides Cybersecurity Consulting and Advisory, Assessment, and Cybersecurity Architecture and Engineering services to government and commercial organizations. Excentium is an accredited FedRAMP Independent Assessor (IAS), formerly known as a Third-Party Assessment Organization (3PAO).
We are building our team in support of a major U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) cybersecurity architecture and engineering program, and have an opportunity for a Technical Lead / Chief Security Architect / Engineer to support enterprise security architecture, engineering, and operations across VA's Office of Information Security (OIS).
MINIMUM CLEARANCE LEVEL:
Public Trust — High Risk (Tier 4) Background Investigation
CITIZENSHIP:
US Citizenship required
LOCATION:
Remote / Contractor facility, with occasional coordination at VA Central Office (Washington, D.C.) and limited program-related travel as required
Position Description:
The Technical Lead will serve as Excentium's senior-most technical authority on the program, setting enterprise security architecture and engineering direction across cloud, identity, network, and emerging technology domains. This role leads security architecture reviews, threat modeling, and reference architecture development, and advises VA stakeholders on Zero Trust implementation, modernization strategy, and complex technical trade-offs.
The Technical Lead will represent Excentium in VA governance boards, design reviews, and technical working groups, mentor the broader engineering team, and ensure the technical quality and consistency of architecture deliverables produced across the program.
Position Requirements:
-
15+ years of enterprise security architecture experience at a large company or federal agency of comparable scale to GSA, IRS, DoD, or VA. An additional advanced degree (e.g., Master's or PhD) in an IT-related field may substitute for up to 5 years of the required experience.
-
Demonstrated experience advancing legacy and modern architectures spanning cloud, mobile, IoT, APIs, and emerging technologies such as AI and post-quantum cryptography.
-
Experience with enterprise architecture tools and frameworks (e.g., SABSA) and Federal cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, FISMA, FedRAMP, CIS Controls).
-
Proven ability to lead technical trade-off analysis, design reviews, and cross-functional coordination with program and project leadership.
-
Strong documentation and diagramming skills across network topology, system architecture, and data flow.
Educational Requirements/Qualifications:
-
Master's degree in Cybersecurity, Math, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems Architecture, Telecommunications Systems Design, Architecture Implementation, Information Systems Integration, Software Development Methodologies, Security Engineering, or Network Systems Communications Management.
-
A current certification satisfying DoD 8570/8140 workforce requirements at IAT Level III, IAM Level III, or IASAE Level III. IAT, IAM, and IASAE are qualification levels, not certifications in themselves — each level is satisfied by an approved certification such as CISSP, CASP+ CE, CISA, CISM, CCISO, GCIH, or CSSLP, depending on the level and category. A Project Management Professional (PMP) certification also satisfies this requirement for this role.
Desired Certifications:
-
CISSP
-
CISSP-ISSEP
-
SABSA or an equivalent enterprise security architecture certification
We take pride in building a workforce with a strong Veterans focus.
