The Commercial Supply & Trading internship program inspires tomorrow’s innovators by developing highly motivated students who are ready for challenging projects in the following areas:

  • Product Supply and Trading
  • Crude Oil Supply and Trading
  • Transportation (Rail and Marine)
  • Wholesale Marketing

Interns will work in a collaborative environment to complete special projects that will be presented to senior management. Major accountabilities will include the following:

  • Analyzing different business lines to determine profitability and to recommend improvements
  • Strategizing entrances and exits of different markets
  • Recommendations for optimizing supply systems
  • Evaluation trading strategies

Interns will have exposure in some of the following departments:

_ Product Supply and Trading: _

  • Trades through bulk channels to maximize profit
  • Schedules ~120 million gallons per day of product movements via barge, pipeline, truck, ship, or rail and ensures correct type, quantity, and timing of the load/unload activity
  • Manages appropriate inventory positions that balance the existing market conditions, wholesale forecasts, production schedules, and logistic constraints to keep terminals adequately supplied and refineries balanced
  • Communicates clearly with traders, refinery personnel, wholesale, terminal operators, and logistics operators to develop a schedule
  • Manages secondary costs to move products in the most cost effective manner

_Crude Oil Supply and Trading _

  • Purchases ~3 million barrels of crude each day that provide the greatest economic value to Valero’s refining assets
  • Generates financial gains by buying and selling barrels of crude

_Transportation (Rail and Marine) _

  • Coordinates the most cost efficient shipping activities and railcar requirements between marketing, plants, and customers
  • Ensures on time performance
  • Interacts with railroad companies' support teams on service issues, trip plans, and diversions

_Wholesale Marketing _

  • Interacts with customers and distributors to ensure that refined products are sold into markets that generate the highest profit
  • Manages branded and unbranded channels by working with distributors

This position is hourly nonexempt status, which means you are eligible for overtime pay

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Energy Management, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Distribution, Economics, or related field required.
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 (or higher) on a 4.0 scale preferred.
  • Graduation dates between August 2027 to May 2028 required.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week during the summer required.
  • Able and willing to work in-person at the Valero Headquarters in San Antonio during the internship required.
