HOUMA SUBDISTRICT 02 - UNIT 003 JOB NUMBER: 02/50698559/ENG3-5/9.22.26-LA ENGINEER 3 - ENGINEER 5

DOTD is seeking an experienced Traffic Engineer to support transportation projects and programs through traffic engineering, safety studies, traffic operations, data analysis, signal systems, traffic control, and operational improvements that support safe and efficient travel. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews. No prior licensed engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series. Positions are located in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, and report to Engineer 6/Traffic Engineer. Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.

NOTE: Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.

Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.Job Duties: Depending on level and assignment, Engineer 3 – Engineer 5 may:

  • Performs engineering studies or analyses related to traffic operations, safety, signals, or traffic control.
  • Reviews or prepares traffic reports, signal plans, safety studies, operational analyses, or technical documentation.
  • Supports evaluation of traffic patterns, safety concerns, roadway operations, or mobility improvements.
  • Coordinates with DOTD districts, project teams, consultants, local officials, and other stakeholders.
  • Uses traffic engineering software, data systems, or technical tools to analyze operational needs.
  • Assists with recommendations related to traffic control, signal systems, safety improvements, or operational changes.
  • Applies applicable standards, policies, and procedures related to traffic engineering and transportation operations.
  • Supports emergency or incident response activities as needed.

Position-Specific Details: Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as Engineer 3, 4, or 5 based on qualifications and agency needs.

Compensation: These positions qualify for a Special Entrance Rate (SER). (Include standardized pay table — unchanged, consistent across postings) Engineer 3 – SER at $2,671.20 biweekly Engineer 4 – SER at $2,952.00 biweekly Engineer 5 – SER at $3,158.40 biweekly Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy. Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); Job Appointment (temporary appointment in a classified position for a limit of four years); or by detail to special duty.
