Job Title: Phlebotomist I (Float)Job Description

The Phlebotomist I (Float) provides high-quality specimen collection services across multiple patient service centers, ensuring accurate blood draws, proper specimen handling, and exceptional patient care in a fast-paced laboratory and hospital environment. This role involves traveling between locations in Chino, Eastvale, Riverside, and Upland to support daily operations, maintain regulatory compliance, and deliver reliable results for patients and healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, following established procedures and safety protocols.

  • Collect blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens as required, ensuring proper identification, handling, and storage.

  • Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients to promote comfort and understanding.

  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is 100% accurate before processing.

  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to specific test orders and laboratory protocols.

  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes to maintain specimen integrity during transport.

  • Package specimens correctly for transport, following all procedures and protocols to ensure safe and accurate delivery to the laboratory.

  • Update patient information accurately and perform data entry tasks using Microsoft Office Suite and laboratory systems.

  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a clean and safe work area.

  • Fully understand and follow physicians orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements.

  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure complete accuracy.

  • Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in accordance with established guidelines.

  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and compliance standards.

  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.

  • Provide float coverage across patient service centers in Chino, Eastvale, Riverside, and Upland, adapting to different sites and workflows as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, such as CPT, as required.

  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draws, and venipuncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles.

  • Ability to accurately collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.

  • Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying orders.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and communication.

  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety procedures.

  • Effective communication skills to clearly and courteously explain specimen collection procedures to patients.

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 02 years of overall experience in a clinical or laboratory setting, including at least 6 months of venipuncture experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

  • Experience working in multiple locations or in a float position is beneficial.

  • Strong customer service skills and a patient-focused approach.

  • Ability to handle a high volume of specimens in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.

  • Comfort with answering telephones and communicating laboratory results in accordance with guidelines.

  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and professional development.

Work Environment

This is a float position supporting patient service centers in Chino, Eastvale, Riverside, and Upland, requiring travel between sites as needed. The work environment is fast-paced and clinical, with daily interaction with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff. The role involves working with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen tubes, and computer systems for data entry and Microsoft Office Suite. Candidates must be available to work between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with schedules determined based on operational needs. The setting follows strict OSHA and DEP safety standards, including proper decontamination procedures and maintenance of a clean, organized workspace. Professional attire appropriate for a clinical and patient-facing environment is expected.

This is a Contract position based out of Riverside, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
