Summary This position is located in Radiology/Imaging Services Long Beach, CA. The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist performs a variety of fixed, fluoroscopic, and portable radiographs according to department and DRT quality standards. The technologist will perform examinations the level that was determined according to DRT Quality Standards Responsibilities Duties Include, but are not limited to: - The DRT Lead performs a full range of diagnostic radiographic examinations while serving as the primary technical lead within the Diagnostic Imaging Service. - The incumbent also performs screening and diagnostic mammography examinations - including digital mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) - on a regular and recurring basis, constituting approximately 25 percent of the overall workload. - DRTs perform procedures and examinations in hospitals 4 or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers. - Provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a general knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor - Functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the full performance level and below, providing input on performance, resolving daily workplace issues, and maintaining efficient workflow Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm Compressed/Flexible: Available Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] [NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description.] Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Specialized Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Grade Determinations: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-10 Employees are trained to work in one or more difficult and complex modalities performing procedures related to these modalities as well as performing general diagnostic procedures. At this grade level, any assignment in a single modality must demonstrate significant complexity. Such assignments are unique, perhaps with expert specialization in complex areas of radiologic technology, Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) regulations, and intermediate QM type duties within the program. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: 1. Ability to provide technical oversight and assign personnel and tasks to be accomplished in a manner that assures completion of the workload utilizing the personnel to the greatest advantage thus providing the optimal level of patient care within the workday. 2.. Ability to plan, direct, and distribute work assignments to DRTs at lower grade levels. 3. Skill in instructing and training DRTs on newly acquired equipment. 4. Ability to plan and project staffing needs. 5. Skill to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Preferred Experience: This ADRT Mammography technologist involves the specific knowledge and abilities to perform complex imaging of the breast. Mammographers must be able to employ specialized mammographic image techniques such as magnification views and implant views of the breast. The mammographer is required to be completely familiar with, and adhere to, all U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines regulating the practice of mammography, radiation safety, and quality assurance requirements. Mammographers are subject to the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 (MQSA) and regulated by the FDA. Mammography Technologist is responsible for compliance with VHA, MQSA, ACR and FDA guidelines for mammography certification and accreditation. This subspecialty or special modality requires advanced certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Mammography (M). The incumbent must maintain certification and be in good standing with the governing bodies and must be able to perform secondary function as DRT (X-ray Technologist) during staff shortage and as well as during major emergency or disaster when staff support is needed.
