Full job description

This position is responsible for providing official court reporting for the Superior Court.

  • Works as part of a team of reporters under the direction of the Circuit Court Administrator.

  • Creates verbatim recordings of proceedings held before the Superior Court Judges of the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit, including examination, testimony, judicial opinions, judge's charge to jury, judgment or sentence of court, or other proceedings in court of law.

  • Reads portions of transcript during trial at judge's request and asks speakers to clarify inaudible statements or cancel out any discrepancies.

  • Transcribes, proofs, edits, and produces printed transcripts of proceedings.

  • Provides transcripts upon request and within strict time limitations.

  • Works cooperatively and jointly with team members to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.

  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of recording and transcribing equipment and basic troubleshooting.

  • Knowledge of advanced legal and medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of applicable state, federal, and local laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Knowledge of computer applications related to the work.

  • Skill in recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.

  • Skill in proper use of the English language, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.

  • Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines.

  • Skill in organization and prioritization of work.

  • Ability to set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction.

  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials.

  • Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints.

  • Ability to possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to possess tact, judgment, poise, initiative, and maintain a professional appearance at all times.

Georgia Board of Court Reporting certification and two years of court reporting experience in a court and in the freelance field of service. Registered as a professional reporter of the NCRA or passed an equivalent qualifying examination. Special consideration would be extended to Registered Professional Reporters and reporters who possess a Certificate of Merit from the NCRA. Salary range will be based on experience. A State Travel Stipend and Transcript Pay will be paid in addition to the salary. The Georgia Board of Court Reporting requires that all court reporters in the state of Georgia be certified. Certification may be achieved by testing with the National Court Reporters Association or the National Verbatim Reporters Association. After passing a national exam, an applicant may apply for Georgia certification. The previous attainment of a passing score on the NCRA Exam or the NVRA Exam does satisfy the Board's NCRA and NVRA testing requirements, respectively. The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee is regularly required to use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects up to 50 lbs. The employee occasionally lifts. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing – maintain equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.
  • Crouching – bending body forward by bending leg, spine.
  • Feeling – perceiving attributes of objects by touch with skin, fingertips.
  • Grasping – applying pressure to object with fingers, palm.
  • Handling – picking, holding, or working with whole hand.
  • Hearing 1 – perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.
  • Hearing 2 – receive detailed information, make discrimination in sound.
  • Manual Dexterity – picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing – for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word.
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
  • Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed in a courtroom, office, or computer room.
