Full job description

RESPONSIBILITIES

I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides genetic counseling and referral services for individuals and families at risk for or diagnosed with a genetic disorder.

  • Promotes high quality standards of care for clients.

  • Provides consultation and education services for health care providers and clients.

  • Acts as a facilitator regarding molecular and cytogenetic testing.

  • Demonstrates problem-solving skills based on theoretical knowledge and clinical experience.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Essential: finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking, lifting usual weight of 5 pounds, pushing/pulling usual weight of 50 pounds, carrying usual weight of 10 pounds.

  • Frequent: standing, walking, reaching above, at and below shoulder level, repetitive arm/hand motions

  • Occasional: sitting, stooping/bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground, squatting, twisting body, lifting and carrying weight up to 20 pounds, pushing/pulling weight up to 50 pounds, static gripping of an object for a prolonged period, frequent gripping of an object

  • Operates various office and audiovisual equipment.

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.

  • Work environment may be stressful due to multiple requests/projects and priorities.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

  • Master’s degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program.

  • Board eligible for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Certification as a Genetic Counselor to be obtained within three (3) years, commencing with date of hire.

  • Current certification in CPR at Healthcare Professional level.

B. EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working in the field of genetics preferred.

  • Prior clinical genetic specialist/administrative/teaching experience preferred.
