Job Title: Substation Electrician Job Description
As a Substation Electrician, you assist with installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing high- and medium-voltage substation equipment and electrical systems. You perform routine maintenance, basic electrical testing, and troubleshooting using meters, meggers, drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams. You follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding, PPE, switching, and other safety procedures while supporting outages, emergency response, and service restoration. You support field operations by installing conduit, cable, and wiring, operating tools and equipment, performing physical tasks, and documenting completed work and test results.
Responsibilities

Install, inspect, maintain, and repair high- and medium-voltage substation equipment and electrical systems.

Perform routine maintenance and basic electrical testing on substation and industrial electrical equipment.

Troubleshoot electrical systems, controls, motors, transformers, relays, and other industrial equipment using appropriate diagnostic methods.

Use meters, meggers, multimeters, and other diagnostic tools to identify and resolve electrical issues.
-
Conduct point-to-point wire checks, installation verification, and electrical testing to ensure systems function properly and meet specifications.

Read and interpret drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, manuals, and one-line diagrams to support installation and maintenance activities.

Support maintenance and commissioning activities on industrial electrical systems, including medium-voltage equipment (up to 35 kV in some cases).

Install conduit, cable, and wiring in substations and related industrial environments.

Operate hand and power tools and other equipment safely to complete electrical and physical tasks.

Follow LOTO, grounding, PPE, switching, and other safety procedures at all times.

Support planned and unplanned outages, emergency response, and service restoration efforts.

Document completed work, test results, and any issues found or corrected in a clear and accurate manner.

Work independently or as part of a team to complete tasks in a high-paced, challenging environment.

Adapt quickly to changing roles and responsibilities based on site operational needs.

Perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, and working at heights or in confined spaces.

Comply with all safety, environmental, and operational standards while working with high-voltage equipment.
Essential Skills

High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
-
At least 3 years of experience working as a licensed electrician, including Journeyman-level experience.

Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical systems, controls, motors, transformers, relays, and other industrial equipment.

Ability to perform point-to-point wire checks, installation verification, and electrical testing.
-
Proficiency using electrical testing equipment such as multimeters, meggers, and other diagnostic tools.
-
Ability to read and interpret basic prints, drawings, schematics, manuals, and one-line diagrams.
-
Basic understanding of electrical principles, including AC/DC circuits and electrical safety.

Proficiency with hand and power tools for electrical installation and maintenance work.

Capability to perform physical tasks, including lifting 50+ pounds, working at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions.

Strong safety focus, attention to detail, and adherence to safety procedures such as LOTO, grounding, PPE, and switching.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Capacity to work in environments with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise.

Ability to rapidly change roles and responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment.

Comfort working with high-voltage and medium-voltage equipment, including substation systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Associate degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial maintenance technology is preferred.

Experience with substation maintenance, industrial electrical systems, generators, and relay equipment.

Experience in industrial or military electrical environments is beneficial.

Knowledge of print reading for drawings, manuals, and one-line diagrams.

Ability to stand up to 6 hours per day and sit up to 3 hours per day.

Ability to walk up to 3 hours per day and climb ladders or stairs up to 3 hours per day.

Ability to push or pull up to 75 pounds (unassisted) for 12 hours per day.
-
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (unassisted) for 12 hours per day.

Ability to reach overhead up to 3 hours per day and perform upper body twisting up to 6 hours per day.

Ability to kneel or crouch up to 3 hours per day.
-
Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees for up to 3 hours per day.

Capability to work safely at heights up to 500 feet and in confined spaces.

Willingness to complete a pre-employment questionnaire and/or physical, which may include a medical history review, to confirm ability to meet physical job requirements.

Schedule flexibility to accommodate varying site operational needs, including frequent overtime and weekend support.

Work Environment
This role is primarily based outdoors at onsite substation and industrial locations. You work around high- and medium-voltage equipment, generators, and other industrial systems, often in a high-paced environment with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise. The schedule varies based on site operational needs and may include frequent overtime and weekend work to support outages and service restoration. You perform significant physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing ladders and stairs, kneeling, reaching overhead, twisting, and lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted. You may push or pull up to 75 pounds and work in temperatures over 80 degrees for extended periods. The position requires safe work at heights up to 500 feet and in confined spaces, always following strict safety procedures and using appropriate PPE.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $50.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
