MISSION: It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation. JOB PURPOSE: Under general supervision, serves as the shift supervisor of the Public Safety Officers, enforces State and Department policies, rules, and regulations for the protection and security of youth, staff, visitors, and property of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serves as the Shift Supervisor of Public Safety Officers.
- Assigns tasks, and duties to subordinates routinely and as situations dictate
- Conducts staff appraisals and counsels with employees as appropriate
- Ensures that officers obtain required training; and prepares schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
- Patrols assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law.
- Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for law enforcement assistance.
- Performs general police work such as maintaining order during emergencies, participating in special operations and directed patrols.
- Testifies in court and other legal proceedings; prosecutes defendants in magistrate's court.
- Keeps records and makes reports regarding activities.
- Enforces SC Traffic Laws.
- Apprehends, arrests violators and escapees.
- Investigates alleged or suspected violations of criminal law.
- Interviews witnesses and suspects.
- Directs traffic, investigates traffic collisions, and controls crowds.
- Assists the Community Service Division by accompanying them on site visits, appointments, etc. of disruptive and violent juveniles.
- Prepares, reviews, approves shift reports and other records.
- Operates communication network and vehicles.
- Ensures that vehicles and equipment are properly maintained.
- Transports youth as deemed necessary.
- Transports youth(s) as required for medical appointments, funerals, etc. in and/or out of state per agency policy and operating procedures.
- Prepares written reports of investigation based on his or her actions.
- Escorts unauthorized, unruly visitors, or terminated employee(s) off DJJ Campuses.
- Performs other related job duties deemed necessary by the Director of Public Safety and/or the Inspector General.
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of laws of South Carolina 1976.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be knowledgeable of state rules and regulations for the protection and security of persons and property of all DJJ facilities.
- Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior; modern law enforcement techniques and procedures; how to collect and preserve evidence, the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement; the laws one is responsible for enforcing; and the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies.
- Skilled in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment.
- Ability to correctly evaluate situations and make good decisions.
- Ability to deal firmly and tactfully with the general public.
- Ability to effectively interview witnesses and suspects.
- Ability to comprehend written materials; and write effectively.
- Under limited supervision, perform given search assignments statewide.
- Will report all training and searches to the Administrator of Public Safety.
- As a Public Safety Officer, assists in ensuring the safety and security of the agency's youth, staff, and visitors.
- Annual scheduled performance reviews will be completed.
- On call for emergencies 24 hours per day.
Essential Position:
- Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent youth daily in accordance with SCDJJ Policies and Procedures.
- Must be able to lift 50+ lobs, sit 1-3 hours per day, stand 1-3 hours per day, walk 1-3 hours per day and ability to work varied hours to meet organizational needs.
- Deal with confidential and sensitive information.
- Prioritize multiple priorities during high stress situations.
- Travels overnight occasionally.
This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: A high school diploma and 18 months experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. SCCJA Certified class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.
Must be a SCCJA Certified class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice offers an exceptional benefits package for FTE positions that includes:
