Full job description
Bring your pharmacy expertise into an inpatient environment where precision, reliability, and teamwork directly support safe medication use across the hospital.
Join UVA Health Inpatient Pharmacy in a role that extends well beyond traditional retail pharmacy. As a Pharmacy Technician 2, you will contribute to medication distribution, sterile and non-sterile preparation, inventory management, controlled substance workflows, and operational readiness for adult and pediatric patient care. Multiple inpatient practice areas and shift arrangements offer the opportunity to find the right fit for your experience and professional goals.
The Role
Please Note - This job posting supports recruitment across multiple inpatient pharmacy areas. By applying to this position, you will be considered for current and future opportunities across these areas based on your qualifications, experience, and the needs of the department.
Pharmacy technicians are essential members of the inpatient care team. Although much of your work takes place behind the scenes, every medication prepared, packaged, stocked, and delivered helps clinicians provide timely, safe, and effective care.
Your average day may include a combination of centralized pharmacy operations, medication distribution, inventory support, automated dispensing cabinet replenishment, or sterile production. Depending on your assignment, you may work extensively in a clean room environment preparing IV medications, syringes, hazardous and non-hazardous products, and total parenteral nutrition for adult and pediatric populations.
In this role, you may:
-
Prepare and distribute medications throughout the hospital, clinics, operating rooms, and procedural areas
-
Pull medications from automated carousel systems and process medication drops
-
Complete cart fills and deliver medications to patient care areas
-
Refill automated dispensing cabinets and medication storage locations
-
Prepare sterile and non-sterile medications in accordance with established standards
-
Compound hazardous and non-hazardous products
-
Support controlled substance distribution processes
-
Receive, stock, rotate, and manage medication inventory
-
Repackage medications to support shortages and unit-dose distribution
-
Audit medication storage areas to promote regulatory compliance and patient safety
-
Collaborate with pharmacists, lead technicians, and fellow pharmacy technicians to identify and escalate workflow concerns
This is an active, detail-intensive role in a fast-paced academic medical center. Success requires adaptability, accuracy, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. Candidates must hold Virginia Pharmacy Technician registration or licensure, maintain PTCB or NHA certification, and have at least six months of pharmacy technician experience.
A key advantage of this opportunity is shift consistency. Candidates are hired directly into their selected shift arrangement, and routine cross-shift coverage is not expected.
-
Day shift opportunities are primarily Monday through Friday with a structured rotating weekend requirement
-
Evening and night shift opportunities may include 7-on, 7-off scheduling
-
Evening and night shifts are eligible for shift differential pay
-
Additional shifts, overtime, and cross-training opportunities may be available on a voluntary basis
