Civil/Structural Engineer

Southern Company Services Technical Shared Solutions– Design Civil Transmission APC & MPC

Position will be located in Birmingham, Alabama

WORK LOCATION

  • Position will be located in Birmingham, Alabama.

  • This position will require a mix of both field and office work.

·This position follows a hybrid work arrangement that includes one designated remote workday per week. Employees are expected to spend the remaining four workdays either in the office or at field locations as required to support project and operational needs.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing structural engineering design services for the Southern Company power delivery system. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to perform structural design for substations and transmission lines and will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations etc. with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce and check structural design calculations and drawings

  • Multi-task and prioritize multiple project assignments to meet tight project commitment dates

  • Effectively communicate with Supervisor, project team, and operating company

  • Develop scope and man-hour estimate for assigned projects

  • Coordinate design activities with other disciplines

  • Provide schedule and staffing input for projects

  • Prepare cost estimates and material takeoffs

  • Provide engineering support to Construction throughout all phases of the project

  • Some non-extended travel to construction sites and client locations is required

  • Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms once receiving company provided training, this will require overnight travel within the Southern Company system

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited program with a minimum of 5 years of experience

  • A Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) license is a plus

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in civil structural design related to power delivery, power generation, or heavy industrial/petrochemical facilities

  • Project design and execution experience

  • Experience in production of contract documents (drawings & specifications) of structural steel and concrete foundations.

  • Experience with structural design pertaining to substations and transmission lines is a plus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Detailed knowledge of structural steel and concrete design principles and industry methodologies

  • High level of initiative and the ability to effectively plan, organize and execute multiple projects

  • Working knowledge of substations and transmission line facilities and components.

  • Proficiency with structural codes and standards such as ACI 318, AISC, ASCE 7, ASCE 113, NESC and IBC

  • Experience using design software and computer programs such as STAAD PRO, Ram Elements, FAD Tools, SP Mats/Column/Slab/Beam, AutoCAD etc.

  • Good communication skills and ability to build and maintain strong relationships are a must

  • Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position requires travel primarily to sites within the Southern Company Power Delivery System – up to 25% per year.
