This position may be filled as an Engineer III or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the experience level of the selected candidate.
The Engineer III/SR position are the advanced levels of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III/SR position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited to no supervision. An Engineer III/SR effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
This position is for a Civil Engineer on our Substation Engineering team located in Duke Energy’s regional headquarters in downtown Cincinnati, OH. This work group is responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 345kV in Ohio and Kentucky. Projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new substations. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work between multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. The final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings, permits, bills of material, etc.

Foundation designs including mat, spread footer, and drilled shaft

Review site development designs

Drawing review for assigned projects

Engineering support during construction

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
-
Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
-
Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

Conducts engineering and related studies; completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.

Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Basic / Required Qualifications - Engineer III

Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
Basic / Required Qualifications - Senior Engineer

Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
Desired Qualifications

Passing grade on the Profession Engineering Exam.

Experience in the Electric Utility Industry.

Experience in electric utility substation design.

Experience with Microsoft Office

Experience with AutoCAD 2020 or newer

Experience with (Autodesk) Inventor

Experience with structural design software (Ram Elements, STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D,etc)

Experience with structural steel and reinforced concrete designs

Experience with foundation design including spread footer and drilled shaft foundations
Working Conditions

Some travel (<10%) outside geographical area.

Office environment with frequent site visits, in various weather conditions.

May need to work in confined spaces and/or in noisy work areas. Exposure to potential hazards is commonplace.

Exposure to hazards is commonplace. Hazardous areas routinely encountered include open ditches, heavy machinery, excessive noise, vehicle traffic and high voltage equipment.

Must have the ability to walk extended distances on various types of terrain.

Must have the ability to audibly and visually identify the presence of a danger or hazard.

Support for Delivery Operations during emergency storm restoration, which could require extended hours working outdoors in any weather condition.
