Full job description

Jacobs is seeking a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Intern to join our Rail & Transit Vehicles/Systems team in Portland, OR. This internship is expected to last at least six months, with full-time hours during Summer and Fall 2027. It offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting active rail transit procurements and systems engineering programs across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

You will work alongside experienced project managers and engineers providing technical consulting services to public transit agencies on complex rolling stock procurements, signaling and control systems, and fleet engineering programs. You will work on our current portfolio which includes light rail vehicle (LRV) procurement oversight and urban rail signaling programs— giving you real exposure to the full lifecycle of major transit capital programs.

This is not a passive internship. You will contribute to meaningful project deliverables, support technical reviews, draft and edit specification documents, and help the team manage large volumes of engineering data and contract information. If you are an engineering student who loves transit, writes clearly, and this role is for you.

Your Responsibilities May Also Include:

  • Assist in the review and organization of rail vehicle technical specifications, contract deliverables, and vendor submittals.

  • Support preparation of technical comments and disposition matrices on manufacturer design submissions.

  • Draft, edit, and proofread technical memoranda, meeting minutes, presentations and internal reports.

  • Support senior engineers in client communications and project management tasks.

  • Engage in continuous professional development to enhance rail engineering knowledge.

  • In pursuit of a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

  • Must be at least a rising Junior (have completed at least sophomore year)

Ideally, You Will Also Have :

  • 2.5 GPA

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a core requirement — equally as important as technical aptitude

  • Coursework and/or interest in transportation, Rail, and CAD software is preferred.

Authorization to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship, now or in the future
