Full job description

Job Description

Insight Global is seeking a hands-on Senior Electrical Engineer to support the development of behind-the-meter power generation projects for AI data centers. This person will help design the electrical infrastructure that connects power generation assets to large-scale customer loads.

The engineer will personally develop electrical drawings, calculations, equipment requirements, cost inputs, and project schedules during the early stages of each project. This is a production-focused engineering role for someone comfortable working directly in electrical designs rather than primarily managing others.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities Develop and maintain electrical single-line diagrams for behind-the-meter power generation projects. Design electrical systems that connect generation assets through medium-voltage collection systems and high-voltage substations. Support electrical architecture involving generator terminals, transformers, switchgear, breakers, substations, and utility interconnections. Perform or review electrical calculations related to fault current, short circuit, load flow, equipment duty, grounding, and arc flash. Help determine voltage levels, equipment ratings, transformer configurations, and substation arrangements for each project. Support projects involving high-voltage systems at 138 kV and above, with many applications reaching 345 kV. Prepare technical requirements and specifications for transformers, switchgear, breakers, substations, and other major electrical equipment. Coordinate with utilities regarding interconnection requirements, design standards, equipment needs, and system constraints. Partner with gas turbine manufacturers, equipment vendors, engineering contractors, and construction teams to resolve technical questions. Review contractor and vendor drawings, calculations, equipment data, and technical assumptions for accuracy. Identify electrical design risks, equipment limitations, scope gaps, and long-lead items early in project development. Build equipment lists and engineering inputs that support project cost estimates and budgets. Provide electrical input into project schedules, including equipment procurement, utility interconnection, design, construction, and energization milestones. Support concept development and pre-FEED engineering before detailed design and construction begin. Present electrical recommendations, risks, costs, and scheduling considerations to project leadership and customer stakeholders. Help create repeatable electrical design standards that can be applied across multiple power generation sites.

Skills and Requirements

Must-Haves Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Professional experience supporting power generation, utility, high-voltage substation, or large industrial electrical projects. Hands-on experience producing or modifying electrical single-line diagrams, calculations, equipment specifications, or similar engineering deliverables. Strong understanding of high-voltage electrical systems at 138 kV and above. Ability to support projects that commonly involve 345 kV applications. Experience with high-voltage substations, transmission interconnections, power generation facilities, or utility infrastructure. Understanding of major electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, breakers, substations, and generator electrical systems. Experience supporting project cost estimates, equipment budgets, construction schedules, or long-lead equipment planning. Ability to work directly with technical vendors, utilities, contractors, and internal project stakeholders. Comfortable working in an early-stage project environment where designs, budgets, and schedules are still being developed. Plusses Gas turbine power generation experience, including generator, auxiliary power, excitation, or plant electrical systems. Experience supporting aeroderivative, industrial, or heavy-frame gas turbine projects. Utility engineering experience involving transmission, substations, system planning, protection, or large-load interconnections. Behind-the-meter power generation or data center infrastructure experience. Experience with electrical systems in ERCOT or other major utility and power markets. Familiarity with ETAP, SKM PowerTools, PSS/E, or similar power system modeling software. Experience conducting or reviewing short-circuit, load-flow, arc-flash, grounding, or equipment-duty studies. Experience specifying transformers, switchgear, breakers, or substation equipment. Familiarity with NERC CIP requirements or operational technology cybersecurity. Experience with battery energy storage systems. Familiarity with electrical equipment procurement, bid evaluations, or vendor technical reviews. Professional Engineer registration is welcome, although it is not required.
