Mine Planner
This role oversees yearly mine development strategies, leads cross functional technical teams, and ensures ore supply, cost control, and safety performance align to long range business objectives. The position serves as a key technical authority influencing capital planning, operational excellence, geologic integration, and long-term asset value.
What you will do
The Mine Planner provides direction across mine planning, design, production optimization, reclamation, and regulatory compliance. This role oversees yearly mine development strategies, leads cross functional technical teams, and ensures ore supply, cost control, and safety performance aligning with long range business objectives. The position serves as a key technical authority influencing operational excellence, geologic integration, and long-term asset value.
Key tasks & responsibilities:
1. Strategic Mine Planning & Engineering Leadership

Lead the development of yearly mine plans (1–12 month horizons) aligned to business strategy, ensuring ore reserves, cost forecasts, and operational capabilities are optimized for sustainable output.

Direct feasibility studies, tradeoff analyses, and mid-range planning scenarios to determine optimal mining methods, sequencing, and infrastructure placement.

Coordinate with third party engineering firms supporting detailed design, geotechnical assessments, hydrology, reclamation planning, and regulatory submissions.

Provide technical review of mine designs, geologic models, and reserve calculations, ensuring alignment with corporate standards and regulatory expectations.

Integrate geologic, environmental, and operational inputs into adaptive mine plans that maximize recovery while reducing waste, risk, and cost.
2. Operational Excellence & Production Performance

Oversee daily, weekly, and monthly operational performance, ensuring production targets, stripping ratios, and ore quality KPIs are achieved.

Lead root cause analyses, production reconciliation, and variance investigations, ensuring discrepancies between model, survey, and actuals are resolved quickly.

Implement advanced extraction optimization methods using mine planning software.

Identify and drive continuous improvement projects to reduce operating costs, increase equipment productivity, and improve ore control.

Provide direction to mine operations leadership for haulage optimization, pit sequencing, and contractor performance management.
3. Technical Authority for Safety & Environmental Compliance

Serve as a technical steward ensuring mine designs adhere to MSHA, environmental, water management, and land stewardship regulations.

Lead or oversee risk assessments, hazard analyses, ground control reviews, and technical incident investigations.

Ensure environmental mitigation, water control, pit dewatering, and reclamation strategies meet compliance requirements and long-term landform stability goals.

Promote a strong engineering driven safety culture through mentoring, field interactions, and procedural improvements.
4. Leadership, Team Development & Cross Functional Influence

Serve as the planning liaison among geology, processing, environmental, operations, procurement, and finance functions.

Present mine plans, engineering decisions, risk profiles, and investment recommendations to senior leadership.

Guide the implementation of technology upgrades, digital tools, automation, and mine planning software enhancements.
5. Advanced Reclamation, Closure, & Sustainability Strategy

Develop closure-ready mine designs and progressive reclamation strategies that optimize cost, schedule, and long-term stability.

Lead cross-functional reviews of reclamation material balances, geomorphic designs, and long-term water management considerations.

Ensure designs incorporate best practice environmental stewardship aligned with corporate sustainability frameworks.

Support regional and corporate sustainability reporting through engineering data, carbon impact insights, and land-use forecasting.
Required Qualifications
-
10+ years of mining operations experience, lead capacity preferred.
-
Experience in MineSite mine design & Scheduling Software.

High School Diploma
-
Current Part 48 Mine Safety & Health Administration Certification
Technical Expertise
-
Advanced proficiency with mine planning and modeling software ( AutoCAD, MineSight).

Strong understanding of geologic interpretation, ore control, hydrology, geotechnical inputs, and environmental constraints.

Demonstrated ability to lead feasibility studies, cost modelling, scheduling, and production optimization.
-
Expertise in open pit mining operations (phosphate experience preferred but not required).
Leadership & Behavioral Competencies

Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical teams and influence without authority.

Strong coaching, mentoring, and communication skills.
-
Demonstrated ability to drive change, implement improvements, and challenge assumptions constructively.

High level of business acumen including budgeting, capital planning, and strategic decision-making.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary of $ 73120.00 - 109680.00 per year. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Other benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. If selected for this role, the offer may vary based on market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
