Full job description

Genomics Co-Op

Major Tasks We are seeking a highly motivated Genomics Co-op/Intern to support the development and application of long-read sequencing workflows for novel haplotype discovery in diverse germplasm. This project focuses on leveraging PacBio HiFi sequencing and advanced bioinformatics approaches to identify genetic variation beyond single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including structural variants (SVs) and copy number variants (CNVs), that may contribute to valuable agronomic traits. The successful candidate will work at the interface of computational biology, genomics, and plant breeding to develop scalable analytical pipelines, characterize novel haplotypes in diverse germplasm, and evaluate strategies for incorporating genetic variation into breeding applications.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development and application of long-read sequencing workflows for novel haplotype discovery in diverse germplasm.

  • Leverage PacBio HiFi sequencing and advanced bioinformatics approaches to identify genetic variation beyond SNPs, including SVs and CNVs.

  • Work at the interface of computational biology, genomics, and plant breeding to develop scalable analytical pipelines.

  • Characterize novel haplotypes in diverse germplasm.

  • Evaluate strategies for incorporating genetic variation into breeding applications.

WHO YOU ARE

Education

  • Pursuing a degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Genetics, Plant Science or related field.

Technical skills

  • Experience with long-read sequencing analysis (PacBio, ONT, etc)

  • Experience with variant calling (SNPs, indels, SV, CNV)

  • Knowledge of command-line interfaces for bioinformatic tools

  • Python and/or R experience

  • Knowledge of population genetics, haplotypes, and genomic diversity.

Preferred competencies

  • Scientific curiosity and problem-solving mindset

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks

  • Effective written and verbal communication

  • Collaborative approach to multidisciplinary research

Employees can expect to be paid a salary of approximately between $22.75 to $47.75. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits may include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc (if relevant). This salary (or salary range) is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.

This posting will be available for application until at least March 19, 2027
