Purpose :

The Susan Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship program is intended to help stimulate the career interest and foster the professional development of potential Oncology Nurses. The program is focused on the critically important field of Oncology Nursing. The Fellowship will enhance the student’s core clinical education through direct observation of Oncology patient care and exposure to related patient care duties and services that typify Oncology nurses’ valuable role and important inter-relationships with other members of the healthcare team. Opportunities to attend various pertinent internal educational programs and meetings with key staff members at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (“HUP”) will provide additional learning experiences for the student nurse.

Program Scope :

The Fellowship program includes a comprehensive scope of direct observational and learning experiences within the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) including exposure to:

  • Oncology Nursing (possible roles/typical responsibilities, applied practice, possible career opportunities, etc.)

  • Medical & Surgical Oncology (including treatment plans, key policies/procedures, patient education, etc.)

  • Clinical Research

  • Oncology Office/Functional Organization (organization, functions, roles/responsibilities)

  • Palliative Care Department (organization, resources, services)

  • Infusion Services

  • Cellular Therapy

  • Radiation Therapy

  • Hospice Services

  • Patient Support Programs

  • Nurse Navigation

  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society/Survivorship

  • Various Internal Oncology-Related Forums

In addition, as part of this learning/development experience, the student nurse will be required to complete an Evidence-Based Practice Research project (see below) in some aspect of Oncology Nursing which will be presented to their supervisory management during the last week of the program.

The program will span eight (8) weeks in length, from May 30th- July 24th, 2027 and will be conducted at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (in Philadelphia, PA). The schedule will include 40 hours per week, ranging from 4-12 hour shifts; the daily schedule may vary during the week based on special experiences and opportunities.

The Evidence-Based Practice Project will be completed under the direction of an Oncology Nurse Mentor. The Evidence-Based Practice Project is an opportunity for each nurse resident to utilize the principles and context of EBP to evaluate a nursing policy, nursing practice or procedure, and make recommendations based on current evidence.

The student nurses will be paid a competitive hourly rate during this 8-week Fellowship program.

This Fellowship is being offered to eight (8) rising nursing seniors from an accredited BSN nursing program. Applicants must be in good academic standing (recommended GPA of 3.0 or greater).
