Summary
This position will be located within the North Florida/South Georgia VA Health Care System at the Andrew K. Baker Community Based Outpatient Clinic, Patient Aligned Care Team. Work in a clinical laboratory providing diagnostic functions to include blood-drawing procedures and specimen processing, provide technical and supportive assistance to medical personnel and team members and assist with providing continuity of care for patients of all ages.
Duties
Major Duties include but not limited to: Receives request for testing into the laboratory. Recognizes emergency situations and takes necessary action. Perform arrange of diagnostic support studies such as taking and labeling specimens for the laboratory. Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precautions at all times while drawing blood. Explains procedures to patients prior to performing. Receives and relays incoming telephone calls as well as electronic messages. Maintains the blood drawing room, including the replacement of supplies as needed. Assists clinicians when needed by performing (but not limited to) EKG's. Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms and prepares for next patient encounters if assigned area requires it. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/31/2026. This occupational series has a Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR)Medical Technician Series (0645): Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings OR Technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to the IOR, candidates must also meet the follow requirement: To be creditable, specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience are not required by this standard to have general experience. Time-In-Grade Requirement (if applicable): Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
