Job Duties

The Engineering Intern is a seasonal position that assists the Engineering Department with the oversight of municipal and private infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include interpreting construction plans and specifications to guide field crews and assisting with project compliance. The role involves regular interaction with the public, contractors, and City staff, requiring strong communication skills. The intern will prepare daily inspection reports and project documentation accurately. Additional duties include conducting surveying tasks with GPS equipment and assisting with drafting and mapping using AutoCAD and ArcGIS software.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with construction oversight for City projects, ensuring effective interaction with the public and construction contractors.

Assist in overseeing construction on private projects, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

Assist in monitoring right-of-way and driveway permit activities to ensure compliance with City standards and requirements.

Perform various computer tasks related to construction projects, including creating maps, spreadsheets, and communications.

Assist with construction stormwater site inspections.

Aid in construction field surveying activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Understanding of construction site operations and equipment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and ArcGIS software.

Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, residents, developers, consultants, and City staff.

Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Minimum Education Required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED.

Currently enrolled in a college or technical school in civil engineering, civil engineering technology, or related field.

Must possess and maintain a valid Class D driver's license.

Minimum Experience Required

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoor and outdoor environments; exposure to computer screens; working closely with others; frequent interruptions. Possible exposure to inclement weather conditions, exposure to working with moving objects/vehicles, and other hazards. The work is primarily field-based with the potential need for occasional lifting of supplies up to 50 pounds.
