OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:

The Health and Nutrition Advisor oversees the delivery of health, safety, and nutrition services for enrolled Head Start pregnant participants, children from birth through age five, and their families. This role ensures compliance with child health requirements; coordinates screenings, follow-up, and treatment services; supports nutrition and wellness initiatives; leads program-wide health and safety practices, training, and compliance; manages MVAC’s Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) sponsorship; and establishes and maintains the Health Services Advisory Committee. The position develops and maintains professional working relationships with families, partners, co-workers, and community service providers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Plan, develop, implement, and monitor compliant health and nutrition services for enrolled Head Start pregnant participants, children, and families.

  • Oversee preventive health, nutrition, dental, screening, re-screening, treatment, referral, and follow-up services; monitor children’s ongoing health status and needs.

  • Manage MVAC’s CACFP sponsorship, including regulatory compliance, food-service contracts, menus, records, staff training, site monitoring visits, monthly reimbursement claims, and the annual sponsorship application and Management Plan.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor program-wide safety policies, emergency procedures, risk-reduction plans, drills, training, injury follow-up, communicable-illness reporting, and facility or classroom monitoring.

  • Ensure compliance with MVAC policies and procedures, Head Start Program Performance Standards, Minnesota DCYF child care center statutes and rules, mandated-reporting requirements, and applicable health and safety standards.

  • Establish and maintain the Health Services Advisory Committee and secure annual Health Consultant approval of health policies.

  • Train and support staff on health, nutrition, CACFP, sanitation, safety, and related policies and procedures; participate in hiring and training consultants when applicable.

  • Maintain accurate and timely ChildPlus records, monitoring reports, invoices, receipts, claims, program data, and required documentation; contribute data for meetings, reviews, self-assessments, corrective action plans, grant writing, and the annual Program Information Report.

  • Build collaborative relationships with families, staff, consultants, partners, and community providers while supporting School Readiness and Parent, Family, and Community Engagement goals.

  • Perform other duties as assigned and uphold MVAC’s standards for confidentiality, professionalism, teamwork, safety, and respectful client service.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a health services field, community health, or a closely related field.

  • Experience: At least two years of experience in a related health-services or community-health field preferred.

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of nutrition, dental health, and pediatric health preferred.

  • Skills: Strong computer, communication, organizational, and technical-writing skills. Experience using varied adult-training methods is desirable.
