SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

The Automation Engineer is primarily responsible for the development, integration, and sustainment of industrial control systems, primarily focused on the support and sustaining of existing PLC-controlled products and development of automated accelerated testing for new electromechanical tools. This role collaborates cross-functionally with internal teams while managing third-party partners in hardware and system development.

REPORTING TO : Manager, New Product Development Engineering

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead or contribute to self-contained automation or controls-based projects, including accelerated electromechanical testing systems for new products.

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and support existing PLC-based automation systems.

  • Collaborate with product engineers, product managers, and third-party contractors to design and develop PCBA-controlled systems, with a focus on closed-loop motor/motion control and data acquisition.

  • Manage third-party contractors for hardware development, including component specification, SOW generation, quotation review, technical oversight, scheduling, and verification testing.

  • Generate and maintain technical documentation (schematics, drawings, BOMs, process flow diagrams, etc.) in accordance with internal processes and quality standards.

  • Research and evaluate new technologies to support product innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Conduct benchmark, accelerated life, laboratory, and field testing of new and existing products.

  • Engage with Product Managers to capture Voice of Customer (VOC) feedback and translate requirements into design improvements.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and certification requirements, working with regulatory bodies as needed.

  • Perform root cause investigations and implement corrective actions.

  • Support supply chain activities including supplier selection, qualification, and technical engagement.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform this job successfully.

  • Required:

  • Ability to design, test, troubleshoot, and implement custom control hardware and software into new products and to test and verify existing product functionality.

  • Experience programming embedded control systems using languages such as C, C++, or Python, and/or PLC and HMI systems using IEC 61131-3 languages (e.g. Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams) within structured control architectures.

  • Ability to diagnose or troubleshoot industrial control panel issues, including diagnosing hardware component faults, and wiring panels with AC and DC electrical circuits.

  • Ability to integrate electrical designs into mechanical assemblies, including selecting and specifying components such as motors, encoders, load cells, and sensors, and collaborating with mechanical engineering teams on integration into new and existing products.

  • Experience with data acquisition (DAQ) and post-processing/analysis.

  • Strong time management and prioritization skills across multiple projects.

  • Strong communication skills and business acumen, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

  • Preferred:

  • Experience with 3D CAD design. SolidWorks preferred.

  • Experience developing Windows-based applications that interface with PCBA or PLC-controlled systems.

  • Experience with root-cause / corrective countermeasure (RCCM).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent, required.

  • 2+ years of experience in PCBA-based control systems (hardware and embedded software), with additional experience in PLC/HMI systems preferred. Experience with motor/motion control strongly desired.

Total Rewards

The compensation range for this position is $86,000.00 - $129,000.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
