Associate Professor, Computational Humanities and Roman Archaeology

The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York University, seeks to make an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (with tenure) of a scholar with a dual focus on Computational Humanities and on Roman Archaeology.

We are looking for someone with broad skills and wide experience in the Digital Humanities at a global scale. They will play a leading role in providing research training to graduate students in a range of techniques including network analysis, graph databases, and also digital publishing. They should have expert knowledge of recent developments in 3D modeling, virtual environments such as game engines, machine learning, Linked Open Data and generative artificial intelligence (gAI).

The person will also have a broad knowledge of material culture studies especially in relation to the Roman world. Knowledge of Roman numismatics and ceramics will be an advantage. The person should also be willing to work with colleagues who have similar expertise in the material culture of other periods and places.

Where appropriate they will work closely with ISAWs Associate Director (Digital) and other faculty and research scholars in the ISAW library and elsewhere. A proven aptitude for collaborative work, and a strong commitment to pedagogy is essential.

The postholder will conduct research to the highest standard and publish its results in whatever media are appropriate. They will be expected to develop their international leadership and be prepared to offer advice to colleagues across NYU and elsewhere on developing research in their area of expertise. They will themselves manage research projects and supervise students and employees working on them, and will have commensurate budgetary responsibilities.

The Institute’s doctoral program emphasizes research seminars and individual supervision. The faculty is involved in choosing a group of visiting researchers each year. The postholder will share in the collective service carried out by ISAW T-Faculty and from time to time will serve on committees of the ISAW Faculty as required.

Salary Information:

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $140,000-$180,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
