Full job description
Description
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Systems Engineering. Depending on the experience and qualifications of the candidate, the position may be at any rank, with or without indefinite tenure.
The Department seeks applicants whose research expertise in systems engineering methods (e.g. optimization, decision science, networks and multi-agent systems, simulation and control) allow them to create solutions that integrate technology, promote resilience, and enhance societal outcomes in the natural and/or built environment.
Our CEE Department has distinctive interdisciplinary education and research programs that include activities in sensing, control, information modeling, and visualization of infrastructure and environmental systems; environmental chemistry; water and air quality engineering and science; climate change adaptation; engineering for sustainability and resilience; smart cities; environmental nanotechnology and biotechnology; materials modeling; environmental justice, and energy systems analysis. We have state-of-the-art experimental and computing facilities and offer unparalleled opportunities to collaborate with world-class colleagues. In support of interdisciplinary collaborations, a joint appointment between CEE and another department or college at Carnegie Mellon is possible.
We are strongly committed to all members of our community: students, faculty, and staff. Our vision is to reimagine civil and environmental engineering through innovative leadership in education and research, by integrating systems thinking and new technologies, and empowering a community enriched by varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We prepare socially conscious problem solvers to lead the world to a sustainable and resilient future. Our mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and to conduct engineering research that addresses important societal challenges. We strive to accomplish this with the highest dedication to quality and integrity. CMU seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples via our Dual Career Program (https://www.cmu.edu/jobs/dual-careers/index.html) , which assists with dual-career searches. The mission, goals, current activities, and research center/institute engagements of the CEE Department are described at https://cee.engineering.cmu.edu/ .
Qualifications
Candidates should have a strong record of research, scholarship, teaching, and service commensurate with their experience. The successful candidate will be expected to create undergraduate and graduate learning environments that address the needs of students from a variety of backgrounds with differing learning styles and abilities. They will be expected to supervise graduate students, teach undergraduate and graduate classes, develop an externally sponsored research program, collaborate with other faculty and be involved in service to the university and profession. This appointment offers outstanding scope for the appointee's individual and collaborative research talents and provides an opportunity for leadership in developing interdisciplinary sponsored research programs. Applicants for this position should have an earned PhD in civil and/or environmental engineering or a related discipline. We are open to applications of systems engineering applied to a broad range of civil and environmental systems in both the built and natural environments.
Application Instructions
Interested applicants should submit the following materials:
(1) a cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) research statement, (4) teaching and mentoring statement, (5) a professional service statement and (6) a list of three references. The professional service statement should describe the candidate’s past and potential contributions to professional service, particularly in STEM fields. Professional references will be consulted only at a later stage of the search process and after discussion with the candidate.
Please address questions to Prof. Peter J. Adams, CEE Faculty Search Chair
Review of applications will begin November 15, 2025, and will continue until an appropriate candidate is identified.
