Full job description

Description

We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Finance leader to serve in a Contract role overseeing accounting operations, financial planning, and reporting for a large international nonprofit organization. This position will guide the accounting team, strengthen internal controls, and deliver timely, accurate financial information that supports executive decision-making. The role also partners across the organization on budgeting, cash forecasting, compliance, and audit readiness while promoting efficient and well-documented financial processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead day-to-day accounting activities, assign team priorities, and establish an organized workflow that supports efficient month-end close and reliable financial reporting.

  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate finance staff, including supporting recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing development.

  • Maintain a strong control environment across accounting operations to protect accuracy, consistency, and compliance.

  • Oversee monthly close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, balance sheet reviews, and preparation of internal and consolidated financial statements.

  • Direct the annual audit process by coordinating schedules, reviewing workpapers, and guiding the team through audit preparation and follow-up requests.

  • Ensure completion of federal, state, and other required filings in a timely manner and prepare materials for executive review and approval.

  • Partner with organizational leadership to develop the annual budget and produce monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc budget reporting and variance analysis.

  • Prepare rolling cash flow forecasts, monitor daily cash activity, and support capital planning through forward-looking financial analysis.

  • Evaluate operating results against benchmarks and recommend process improvements, policy updates, and finance system enhancements that increase efficiency and reporting quality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA highly preferred

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, or controllership roles with leadership responsibility in the nonprofit sector.

  • Demonstrated success managing month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.

  • Strong background in audit support, audit workpapers, regulatory compliance, and external reporting requirements.

  • Experience with budgeting, corporate financial planning, cash forecasting, and complex financial analysis.

  • Solid knowledge of accounting standards, internal controls, and financial reporting best practices, including FASB guidance.

  • Ability to review consolidated financial information and ensure the accuracy of internal management reports.

  • Proficiency in developing policies, procedures, and process documentation that improve finance operations.

  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with executives, managers, and cross-functional teams.
