Occupational Therapist (1 day per week)

Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES 2026 Salary Range: $52,341 – $61,805 annually prorated This is a .2 FTE position Work Location: Wayne Education Center

Role Summary As a School-Based Occupational Therapist (OT) at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES, you will provide occupational therapy services to support students’ participation, independence, and success within the educational environment. The Occupational Therapist evaluates students’ functional performance and educational needs, develops and implements appropriate occupational therapy interventions, and collaborates with students, families, teachers, related service providers, administrators, and other professionals to support access to and participation in the school setting.

Occupational therapy services may address areas including fine motor skills, visual-motor and visual-perceptual skills, sensory processing and regulation, motor coordination, functional mobility, self-care skills, assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and other skills that impact a student’s ability to participate in educational activities and routines.

Core Responsibilities

  • Evaluation & Assessment: Evaluates students’ functional performance and educational needs using appropriate standardized and non-standardized assessment methods; completes initial evaluations, re-evaluations, observations, and progress monitoring to determine occupational therapy needs and support educational planning.

  • Occupational Therapy Services: Develops and implements occupational therapy services and interventions based on evaluation findings, student needs, and the Individualized Education Program (IEP), as applicable. Provides individual and/or group services within therapy areas, classrooms, and other educational environments to support students’ participation, access, and independence.

  • Adaptations & Assistive Supports: Adapts activities, materials, routines, and environments to support student participation and success. Assists with the selection, fitting, modification, and use of adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and other supports, and trains students and staff in their safe and effective use to promote independence.

  • Consultation & Collaboration: Collaborates with teachers, families, administrators, related service providers, nurses, and other professionals regarding student needs, accommodations, environmental supports, intervention strategies, and progress. Participates in team meetings, case conferences, IEP development, and educational planning.

  • Documentation & Data Management: Completes required documentation, including evaluations, re-evaluations, progress notes, consultation documentation, IEP-related documentation, and discharge summaries, as applicable. Uses appropriate electronic documentation and data-management software to record student information, maintain records, collect and analyze student performance data, monitor progress, and document service delivery.

  • Program & Professional Responsibilities: Maintains accurate program and service records, including service frequency, student data, and other required statistical or departmental information. Participates in department meetings, professional development, staff training, and other activities related to the delivery and continuous improvement of school-based occupational therapy services.

  • Communication & Professional Practice: Communicates effectively with students, families, school personnel, and other service providers while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. Applies professional judgment and current occupational therapy practices to identify student needs, make recommendations, monitor outcomes, and adjust services as appropriate.

  • Student Safety & Independence: Supports students’ safe participation and independence across educational environments, including classroom, therapy, playground, community-based educational, and other school settings, through appropriate positioning, mobility-related support, adaptive strategies, and functional activities.

Job Qualifications

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Civil Service, Education & Licensure: Civil Service eligibility in Ontario County as an Occupational Therapist. Possession of a valid license and current registration as an Occupational Therapist by the New York State Education Department.

  • Professional Knowledge & Judgment: Knowledge of occupational therapy principles and practices as they relate to student development, educational participation, functional performance, independence, and access to the school environment. Ability to interpret evaluation results, identify student needs, develop appropriate interventions and recommendations, monitor progress, and adjust services based on student performance and educational needs.

  • Communication & Collaboration: Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with students, families, teachers, related service providers, administrators, and other professionals in support of student needs and educational programming.

  • Technology & Documentation: Ability to use computers, electronic documentation systems, data-management software, assistive technology, therapy equipment, and related technology to provide services, document student performance, maintain records, and support student programming.

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility & Positioning: Ability to move throughout classrooms, therapy spaces, school buildings, playgrounds, and community-based educational settings and to stand, sit, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and work at floor level as necessary to conduct evaluations, provide services, and participate in student activities.

  • Student Support & Demonstration: Ability to physically demonstrate therapeutic activities, fine and gross motor activities, self-care skills, functional tasks, and adaptive strategies, and to provide appropriate assistance with positioning, transfers, mobility-related activities, and the safe use of adaptive and assistive equipment as appropriate.

  • Lifting, Carrying & Equipment: Ability to lift at least 20 lbs. and to carry, push, pull, transport, set up, and store therapy materials, adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and instructional resources, including movement of materials between classrooms and therapy locations.

  • Manual Dexterity & Observation: Sufficient fine-motor coordination to administer therapy activities, manipulate materials, operate therapy and assistive equipment, and modify or fabricate adaptive supports. Ability to observe student performance, accurately collect and document data, and communicate information effectively.

  • Physical Capacity & Essential Functions: Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position and ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Must have NYS Occupational Therapist license and have no lifting restrictions.

This is a competitive position. Must meet requirements of Ontario County Civil Service.
