Job Description

Job Description: The Quality Engineer supports quality improvement initiatives and helps the organization meet customer, supplier, production, scrap, and rework expectations. This individual coordinates efforts to obtain and maintain applicable automotive quality certifications, including IATF 16949 and ISO standards. They implement and maintain quality system requirements, lead problem-solving efforts, support audits, and develop quality documentation such as PFMEAs, Control Plans, Flow Charts, and Process Capability Studies. The role works with managers, cross-functional teams, suppliers, and associates to ensure quality standards and procedures are properly understood and followed.

Day to Day:

  • Monitor and support compliance with IATF 16949 and applicable ISO standards
  • Lead cross-functional teams through quality issues and structured problem-solving efforts
  • Validate supplier product quality using control plans, inspection criteria, and sampling procedures
  • Develop and implement quality system improvements that align with business goals

  • Verify that corrective actions and countermeasures effectively resolve quality issues
  • Develop and maintain PFMEAs, Control Plans, Flow Charts, and Process Capability Studies
  • Review engineering specifications, drawings, and manufacturing processes
  • Split time between an open office environment and the plant floor

Real-World Example: At the beginning of the day, the Quality Engineer reviews production and supplier quality concerns from the plant floor. If a component is not meeting specifications, they bring together representatives from quality, engineering, and production to determine the root cause and develop a countermeasure. They review the engineering drawing, inspection criteria, Control Plan, and PFMEA to identify whether documentation or process updates are needed. Once corrective actions are implemented, the engineer verifies their effectiveness, records the results, and updates the appropriate quality documents. They may finish the day preparing for an internal or external audit and confirming that the facility remains compliant with applicable quality standards. This example is a suggested illustration based on the responsibilities listed in the document.
