Job Summary
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for overseeing the administrative, fiscal, and technical operations of the clinical laboratory to ensure efficient workflow, regulatory compliance, and high-quality patient care. This role involves planning, organizing, and evaluating laboratory functions while managing personnel, budgets, and resources. The Manager serves as a technical supervisor for on-site and off-site clinical laboratory functions, ensuring adherence to corporate policies and regulatory standards.
Essential Functions

Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the work of the clinical laboratory, ensuring coordination with other hospital departments to support efficient operations and quality patient care.

Hires, trains, evaluates, and develops laboratory personnel while ensuring staff competencies are assessed on an ongoing basis.

Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, including CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, and other relevant standards, maintaining proper documentation and readiness for inspections.

Establishes, reviews, and updates department policies, procedures, and job descriptions to align with organizational and regulatory requirements.

Manages the department budget, demonstrating fiscal accountability and achieving outcomes within allocated resources.

Collaborates with other hospital departments to resolve issues that impact patient care delivery or organizational objectives.

Delegates tasks appropriately while maintaining accountability for departmental operations and outcomes.
-
Actively engages in quality assurance and safety initiatives within the department, addressing issues promptly to maintain high standards.

Utilizes hospital-wide and department-specific computer software and technology to streamline laboratory processes and improve efficiency.
-
Performs other duties as assigned.

Leadership Responsibilities

Supervision and Staff Management
-
Provides leadership, mentorship and professional development opportunities for departmental staff.
-
Schedules employees to ensure effective use of resources. Consults with Director on staffing issues.

Conducts performance evaluations, sets goals and provides feedback to staff on their performance and development.

Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight
-
Develops and manages departmental budget ensuring cost effective operations while maintaining high quality service.
-
Monitors expenditures, ensuring cost-effective delivery of services.
-
Evaluates and implements new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
-
Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures and protocols to optimize quality and overall efficiencies.
-
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
-
Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies. May oversee the accreditation process with relevant agencies ensuring that services meet or exceed industry standards.

Participates in audits, inspections and accreditation processes as applicable.

Follows established quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency and safety.

Collaboration and Communication

Works closely with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery.

Stays up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes.

Staff Responsibilities

May work in a staff role, when required. Ensures that duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting all competencies established for that job.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science required
-
Master's Degree preferred
-
2-4 years of experience in closely related field required
-
2-4 years of previous leadership experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency with Google and Microsoft platforms, healthcare software systems, and data analysis tools.
Licenses and Certifications

Certified Medical Lab Scientist-ASCP as applicable by state required or

CLS-L - Clinical Lab Scientist License as applicable by state required or

ASCP - Medical Technologist required
