Job Title: Principal Design Engineer (Mechanical / Mechatronic)
Location: Boston, MA
Type: Contract to Hire
Compensation: $73.08 an hour
Work Model: Onsite – onsite
Hours: Standard business hours

Overview: Join a growing U.S. biotechnology organization that supports a federal initiative in next-generation RNA medicine manufacturing. In this role, you will work alongside the Principal Design Engineer as the design authority for the machine hardware and lead designer for the highest-risk mechanical subsystem
Responsibilities

The preliminary system design: block diagram, machine layout, modularisation and integration strategy.

Detailed design of the system subsystems as scoped and defined by the team, including interfaces, fluid flow management, actuation mechanisms, force and displacement profiles, materials compatibility.

Detailed design of automated liquid and sample handling: bulk reagent routing, sample presentation to analytical interfaces, product management from transcription and encapsulation through to fill-finish handoff, with aseptic continuity across every fluid-path boundary.

The consolidated engineering design package: CAD models, 2D manufacturing drawings, bill of materials, assembly plans, and the embedded risk register.

Fabrication, assembly, and verification of the subsystems you designed.
Requirements

BS or MS in mechanical, mechatronic, or biomedical engineering.

Ten or more years designing precision electromechanical instruments or automated production equipment, with at least five as lead or principal designer on products that reached build and qualification.

Expert CAD, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance stack-up analysis, materials selection for fluid contact and biocompatibility, and design for manufacture and assembly.

Deep practical experience of precision fluid handling: pumps, valves, manifolds, tubing sets, connectors, seals, dead-volume and carryover control.

A portfolio of machines that were built, not only drawn.
