Summary You will serve as a Supervisory Park Ranger (Interpretation) with National Park Service . Serves as Branch Chief of Education and Community Engagement, and reports to the Chief of Interpretation & Education. Incumbent is the technical and professional expert for the division and park on education and outreach interpretive services and is responsible for the planning, development, management, supervision, and evaluation of Yosemite's education and outreach interpretive services program. Responsibilities Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Managing and coordinating the education and outreach interpretive services program. Providing direction, reviewing, planning, executing, and coordinating of all education and outreach interpretive services programs and activities for the park. Establishing long- and short-range goals and objectives, identifies needs, initiates, and recommends policies, programs, and standards to be used by education and community engagement staff in the accomplishment of these goals. Monitoring and evaluating the performance of all phases of education and community engagement operations on an annual and day-to-day basis. Planning and reviewing training of permanent and seasonal interpretive staff and provides guidance to subordinate supervisors on personnel issues. Preparing and revising budgets as necessary for all funds allotted to education and community engagement operations, monitoring expenditures to ensure compliance with long-term and short-term objectives. Oversee Yosemite's education and community engagement program, which helps connect 4 million visitors to the park, as well as foster relationships with other external communities that align with the park's missions and objectives. Managing internal and external partnerships related to education programs, as well as agreements with park partners. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period to evaluate your fitness and whether your continuation of employment advances the public interest. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service. Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. This is a supervisory position that may require completion of a supervisory probationary period. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement - 08/31/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Competitive candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the work schedule requirement as the service dates will be reflected. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level: Experience: To qualify, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: 1) Supervising volunteers, interns, and youth work groups and assisting with oversight of seasonal staff; 2) Implementing a visitor services program, providing visitor services and develops guidelines and operating methods that reflect a thorough understanding of agency policies and objectives; 3) Developing and conducting interpretive presentations, and training staff and volunteers; 4) Presenting to a wide variety of audiences using a variety of fully developed interpretive skills, techniques, and tools delivered in person and through interpretive media and technology. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work, which include, but are not limited to, tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work.. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not allow substituting education for experience. Physical Demands: Incumbent serves in a location isolated from major population centers, with weather, altitude and other environmental extremes. Incumbent must be able to monitor programming and services in remote/outlying portions of the park either through direct participation in hikes/walks (8-10 miles) and driving long distances along alpine roadways, often encountering changing weather systems (rain, fog, snow, ice), or developing tools and mechanisms to accomplish these requirements. Work Environment: Work is performed for extended periods both indoors and outdoors. Periods of indoor activity are common during the lengthy Yosemite winter. Extended daylight hours during the summer and long nights during the winter are unique features of this site. May be subject to weather and terrain variances associated with elevations from 2,000-11,000 including heat, sudden freezing summer storms, and cold, windy, snowy winters.
