Job Description

Stanford University's Division of Computational Medicine (https://computationalmedicine.stanford.edu/) is seeking an accomplished Senior Program Manager, Health AI Programs to help move responsible health AI from research into operational use. This role manages a portfolio of research, implementation, and partnership initiatives that connect the Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, and external organizations developing and evaluating AI for health care.

The Program Manager will work closely with Nigam H. Shah, MBBS, PhD, Chief Data Scientist for Stanford Health Care, Professor of Medicine in Computational Medicine and of Biomedical Data Science, and Associate Dean for Research in the Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Shah's research and operational work focuses on bringing AI into clinical use safely, ethically, and cost-effectively.

The role offers substantial responsibility and direct exposure to the work required to translate promising ideas into well-run programs. The Program Manager will turn approved priorities into executable plans, align participants with different goals and constraints, anticipate operational barriers, and give Dr. Shah clear information for decisions. When requested, the Program Manager will serve as his delegated representative for routine management matters while elevating decisions requiring principal investigator, executive, clinical, legal, policy, or institutional approval.

The portfolio may include AI-Care, GUIDE-AI, collaborations with Stanford Health Care, and partnerships with frontier AI laboratories and organizations such as the Coalition for Health AI and PacificAI. This position is well suited to a program manager who enjoys bringing structure to complex work, building trust across organizational boundaries, and staying close enough to the details to ensure commitments are met.

Core responsibilities:

  • Lead program planning and execution by establishing workplans, milestones, owners, decision points, and reporting routines.

  • Coordinate research and operational activities across the School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care, including dependencies involving sponsored research, data use, compliance, and implementation.

  • Manage meetings and working groups, document decisions, drive follow-through, and escalate risks or decisions at the appropriate time.

  • Represent programs and Dr. Shah in routine internal and external meetings within delegated authority and approved parameters.

  • Build productive working relationships with external partners and manage shared deliverables, communications, and events.

  • Evaluate program performance, prepare briefings and recommendations, and implement approved improvements to processes and procedures.

  • Partner with finance and research administration staff to monitor budgets, forecasts, spending, and funding risks.

  • May direct project contributors or supervise staff if assigned.

What you will bring

You will bring a record of independently managing complex programs, exercising sound judgment within defined authority, and earning the trust of stakeholders with different priorities. You can move comfortably between a senior-level briefing and detailed project follow-through, communicate clearly with technical and nontechnical audiences, and raise risks before they become barriers. Experience in academic medicine, health care, artificial intelligence, data science, sponsored research, or another regulated environment is especially relevant.

This position is offered as a hybrid role (onsite 2-3 days/week), subject to operational needs. Please submit a resume and cover letter with your application.

Other duties may also be assigned.
