Field Clinical Engineer

About Paradromics Brain-related illness is one of the last great frontiers in medicine, not because the brain is unknowable, but because it has been inaccessible. Paradromics is building a brain- computer interface (BCI) platform that records brain activity at the highest possible resolution: the individual neuron. AI algorithms then decode this massive amount of brain-data, enabling the seamless translation of thought into treatments. Our first clinical application, the Connexus BCI, will help people who are unable to speak, due to progressive neuromuscular disease and neural injuries such as ALS, spinal cord injuries and stroke, to communicate independently through digital devices. However, the capabilities of our BCI platform go far beyond our first application. With the brain in direct communication with digital devices, we can leverage technology to transform how we treat conditions ranging from sensory and motor deficits to untreatable mental illness.

The Role The Field Clinical Engineer (Clinical Neurotechnology Research Assistant) serves as Paradromics’ trusted technical presence at U.S. clinical sites during early feasibility and first-in-human studies. Reporting to the Director of Clinical Affairs, this field-based role supports safe, reliable use of Paradromics’ implantable BCI system and associated software during surgical procedures, study visits, and neural data collection sessions. This role acts as a critical bridge between clinicians and engineers—ensuring real-world clinical learnings are captured, clearly communicated, and translated into system, process, and risk-management improvements. The position requires significant travel to clinical sites and the ability to operate independently in high-stakes, patient-facing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the in-field technical representative during early feasibility study (EFS) procedures, study visits, and neural recording sessions, working closely with participants, clinical site teams, and Paradromics colleagues.

  • Prepare, configure, calibrate, operate, and break down study systems consistently and correctly, completing appropriate system checks and confirming readiness for clinical and recording sessions. Support the design, execution, and refinement of neural recording and BCI session workflows to generate high-quality, consistent, and analyzable neural data.

  • Monitor neural signals and system performance in real time, recognizing signal loss, artifacts, unexpected behavior, or configuration issues that could affect session quality.

  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, device, connectivity, and signal-quality issues in real time within clinical environments, applying sound judgment and escalating appropriately when additional support is needed.

  • Develop a strong understanding of the relationship between system configuration, neural signals, participant behavior, and task performance, using observations from sessions to help inform experimental workflows and decoding approaches.

  • Identify unexpected system behavior, workflow challenges, usability issues, and emerging risks early, and communicate them clearly to the appropriate teams before they affect participant experience, safety, or study integrity.

  • Capture and communicate field observations, technical issues, failure modes, usability feedback, and system limitations in a structured way that supports engineering improvements and risk-management activities.

  • Build strong relationships with study participants and their support networks, creating a professional, comfortable, and reliable experience during repeated and often lengthy study sessions.

  • Build trust and credibility with investigators, fellows, coordinators, and research staff through preparation, technical competence, sound judgment, responsiveness, and professionalism.

  • Act as a critical feedback loop between the field and internal teams, translating real-world clinical and participant experiences into clear, actionable information for Engineering, Clinical Affairs, Data Science, and Quality.

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of training materials, field playbooks, SOPs, troubleshooting guides, and workflows that enable consistent execution across additional sites, field team members, and future studies.

This role sits at the intersection of people and technology. We welcome candidates coming from either a technical/engineering or clinical background. The strongest candidates will bring deep experience in one area, strong aptitude and curiosity in the other, and enthusiasm for developing expertise across both.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, neuroscience, nursing, biomedical sciences, or another relevant technical or clinical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience.

  • Advanced technical, clinical, or scientific training is welcomed but not required. Required Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience working with complex technology in clinical, research, or other human-facing environments, with a demonstrated ability to learn and operate technical systems independently.

  • Strong technical aptitude and curiosity, including the ability to understand system behavior, investigate problems, and troubleshoot across hardware, software, connectivity, and data.

  • Experience working directly with patients, research participants, clinicians, or other end users, with the interpersonal judgment and empathy needed to build trust during repeated interactions.

  • Ability to recognize and assess data or signal-quality issues and work with technical teams to investigate their source; experience analyzing data programmatically is beneficial but not required.

  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm, thoughtful, and effective when troubleshooting problems in participant-facing or other high-stakes environments.

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts for clinical audiences and clinical/participant experiences for technical teams.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to consistently follow defined procedures, document observations, and escalate issues appropriately.

  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively to U.S. clinical sites and support study activities that may occur outside standard business hours. Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with neurotechnology or neuroscience systems, including neural signals, BCIs, EEG, ECoG, MEAs, neuromodulation, electrophysiology, or neural data-acquisition platforms.

  • Clinical training or experience, such as nursing, clinical research, rehabilitation, neuroscience, or another patient-facing healthcare discipline. Technical experience with Python, MATLAB, signal processing, time-series data, data visualization, or similar analytical tools.

  • Experience supporting medical devices, complex research equipment, or other integrated hardware/software systems in clinical or research environments.

  • Exposure to early feasibility, first-in-human, or small-N clinical studies with heightened safety and regulatory oversight.

  • Familiarity with GCP, IDE studies, and academic medical center or investigator- led research environments.

  • Experience contributing to SOPs, field guides, troubleshooting resources, training materials, or onboarding programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently in the field while maintaining strong communication and partnership with a broader cross-functional team.
