The Ames High School is seeking a Debate Sponsor for the 2026-27 school year.
Summary
The High School Debate Sponsor is responsible for organizing, supervising, and supporting the high school debate program. Responsibilities include coordinating practices and competitions, preparing students for debate events, supporting student development, and ensuring the program operates in accordance with school and district expectations. The role requires strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with students and staff.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Organizes and supervises debate practices, meetings, and competitions.

Prepares and coaches students for debate events, including research, argument development, public speaking, and presentation.

Coordinates participation in debate tournaments and other events.
-
Supervises students and ensures their safety and appropriate conduct during practices, competitions, and travel.

Provides guidance and feedback to students to support skill development and personal growth.
-
Creates a sense of belonging and a welcoming environment for all students.
-
Promotes teamwork, collaboration, critical thinking, and respectful communication.
-
Ensures that student members understand the expectations of the organization and represent excellence within the school.

Follows the guidelines, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Ames Community School District.

Maintains continuous communication with students, families, faculty, and administration as appropriate.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient functioning of the program.
Qualifications:

Experience with debate, speech, public speaking, or a related activity preferred.

Experience working with high school students preferred.

Compensation: $4,841 stipend
