Full job description

Infleqtion is a global quantum technology company solving the world’s most challenging problems. The company harnesses quantum mechanics to build and integrate quantum computers, sensors, and networks. From fundamental physics to leading edge commercial products, Infleqtion enables “quantum everywhere” through our ecosystem of devices and platforms. Location Infleqtion has offices in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia. This is a permanent, full-time position at our Kidlington, Oxford office. Our flexible working policy enables all full-time employees to work from home up to 2 days a week, if work permits. Position Summary As part of our UK growth strategy, we are expanding our Engineering Team and recruiting an Embedded Systems Engineer to support our Quantum RF (QRF) and sensing projects. In this role, you will develop the embedded control, acquisition, timing, and communications systems that underpin quantum-enabled RF sensors and deployable sensing products. You will work closely with physicists, electronics, FPGA, systems, and software engineers to take designs from requirements through implementation, characterisation, integration, and deployment.

Job Responsibilities Technical

  • Develop embedded Linux software, firmware, and board-support packages for FPGA-based embedded systems, particularly Xilinx FPGA SoC platforms, using C/C++, Rust, and related tools.
  • Develop and deploy embedded Linux distributions using Yocto, Buildroot, or similar tools.
  • Develop device-tree configurations, low-level drivers and hardware interfaces for FPGA peripherals, sensors, communications devices, and microcontroller subsystems.
  • Integrate FPGA SoC platforms, microcontrollers, electronics, and higher-level software into robust control, acquisition, timing, signal-processing, and communications systems.
  • Perform board bring-up, hardware–firmware integration, automated test, debugging, and validation using Python and benchtop test equipment.
  • Produce reliable, maintainable software and clear technical documentation, supporting products from prototype through deployment and maintenance.

Personal and Team Responsibilities

  • Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure technical objectives and deadlines are met.
  • Work within multidisciplinary teams of software engineers, electronics engineers, physicists and technicians.
  • Communicate technical risks, findings and design decisions clearly.
  • Adapt to changing requirements and manage technical ambiguity effectively.
  • Take ownership of assigned work from requirements definition through implementation, testing and delivery.

Requirements

Core Requirements

  • Strong embedded Linux development experience on FPGA SoC platforms.
  • Experience configuring, building and deploying embedded Linux distributions using Yocto, BuildRoot or similar, including integration of board-support packages for FPGA based platforms.
  • Experience with board bring-up, bootloaders, Linux kernel and device-tree configuration, drivers, and software deployment.
  • C/C++ and Rust development experience, or willingness to develop in Rust, for embedded Linux or microcontroller systems.
  • Experience with Xilinx tools, ideally Vivado.
  • Experience with Ethernet, SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, GPIO, DMA, ADC, and DAC interfaces.
  • Python development experience in test automation, instrument control, or analysis.
  • Proficient use of Git and CI systems.
  • Able to work effectively in multidisciplinary hardware, software, and physics teams.

Desirable Core Requirements

  • FPGA development experience using VHDL or Verilog on Xilinx FPGAs.
  • Experience with high-throughput data acquisition, streaming, buffering, and multi-core processing.
  • Experience developing RF sensing, timing, synchronisation, or signal-processing systems.
  • Experience with networked instrumentation and protocols such as SCPI, VXI-11/LXI, MQTT, gRPC, or REST APIs.
  • Systems and requirements engineering experience, including UML or SysML.
  • Experience managing or improving CI/CD pipelines.

Travel Up to 10% travel, including international travel, may be required Working conditions and Physical Requirements Work will normally be performed in an office and laboratory environment. Able to efficiently use automated office equipment such as laptops, copiers, and printers; able to effectively engage in communications (via phone, computer, or in-person). Will involve sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 10 kg. Equal Opportunity Regardless of your interest in the quantum industry, you can take pride in the fact that Infleqtion is building an ecosystem of quantum technologies and commercial products, driving the industry towards the future. Studies reveal that while men apply for jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the requirements, women and other groups tend to apply only when they meet all the criteria.
