Description

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry seeks a board-certified or board-eligible pediatric palliative care physician to join the Division of Pediatric Palliative Care at Golisano Children's.

The position is open at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, and may be an Academic or Professional appointment depending on the candidate's background, interests, and career goals. Candidates whose strengths lie primarily in clinical excellence, teaching, and program development are encouraged to apply, as are candidates with an established or emerging scholarly portfolio.

The Division provides interdisciplinary palliative care to children and families across the inpatient and ambulatory settings at Golisano Children's, the referral center for a 17-county region of Western New York.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as attending physician on the inpatient pediatric palliative care consultation service, providing symptom management, goals-of-care facilitation, and complex decision-making support for children with serious illness and their families.

  • Participate in the outpatient palliative care clinic and in longitudinal care of children with medical complexity.

  • Partner with the interdisciplinary team — nursing, social work, chaplaincy, child life, and psychology — and with referring divisions including Hematology/Oncology, Neonatology, Pediatric Critical Care, Cardiology, and Neurology.

  • Participate in the divisional call rotation.

  • Teach medical students, pediatric residents, and fellows across affiliated training programs, including bedside teaching on the consultation service and formal didactics in communication skills, symptom management, and ethics.

  • Serve as a mentor and role model for trainees interested in palliative care careers.

The Department supports multiple pathways to academic contribution, and expectations are defined at appointment in accordance with the candidate's track:

  • Candidates pursuing a Professional appointment will focus primarily on clinical care and teaching, with opportunities to contribute through quality improvement, clinical program development, curriculum and educational innovation, institutional and committee service, and participation in national professional organizations.

  • Candidates pursuing an Academic appointment will additionally pursue scholarly work aligned with their interests — clinical research, health services research, medical education scholarship, or program evaluation — supported by protected academic time. The amount of protected time is determined at appointment and is contingent on available funding, which may include departmental support, extramural grant funding, or program-specific resources. The Department works with faculty to identify and sustain funding sources for academic effort.

All faculty are expected to contribute to divisional quality improvement and program-building initiatives.
