Manager of Software Development Location: Fort Wayne, IN Level: Salary Division / Department: IT Reporting to position: Director of Software Development Travel: N/A

About the Role: We are seeking an experienced and people-focused Manager of Software Development to lead a team of approximately 10 talented Senior Software Engineers and Software Engineers. In this role, you will drive technical excellence, foster collaboration, and ensure the successful delivery of high-quality software solutions that align with our strategic goals. You will serve as both a technical leader and a people manager—empowering your team to grow, maintaining a culture of innovation and accountability, and ensuring the right balance between speed, quality, and scalability. Key Responsibilities Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of software engineers, providing regular feedback, coaching, and career development guidance.

  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and growth-oriented team culture.

  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings, performance reviews, and goal-setting sessions.

Project & Delivery Management

  • Oversee end-to-end software development lifecycle—from design and development to deployment and maintenance.

  • Collaborate with Product Management, Design, and QA to ensure timely and successful delivery of software releases.

  • Prioritize projects, allocate resources effectively, and manage competing demands across the team.

  • Ensure technical decisions align with business objectives and long-term architecture goals.

Technical Leadership

  • Provide hands-on technical guidance, code reviews, and architecture oversight as needed.

  • Champion engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, automation, and CI/CD.

  • Drive continuous improvement in development processes, tools, and workflows.

  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends to guide technical direction.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical deliverables.

  • Communicate progress, challenges, and solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Represent the engineering team in planning sessions, roadmap discussions, and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience.

  • 2+ years of experience managing or leading software engineering teams.

  • Proven ability to lead teams through complex technical projects from inception to delivery.

  • Strong understanding of modern software development practices, including delivery frameworks, DevOps, and cloud-based architectures.

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience leading distributed or hybrid teams.

  • Hands-on experience with C#, Java, SQL, Event-driven Architecture, and cloud services.

  • Prior experience in a fast-paced, product-focused environment.

  • Knowledge of retail and distribution business processes.
