Senior Software Engineer (Java, Prometheus, Grafana)

Job Description

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Software Engineer with strong Java and Spring Boot development experience to improve application observability, operational reliability, and production visibility across a large enterprise application ecosystem. This engineer will work directly in application codebases to instrument services, expose metrics to Prometheus, develop production-grade Grafana dashboards, define alerts, and submit application and observability changes through standard pull-request and CI/CD processes. The role also supports broader enterprise visibility across event-streaming platforms such as Kafka, relational and non-relational databases, and business-intelligence tools such as Looker. This is not a dashboard-administration or cloud-infrastructure-only position. The successful candidate must be able to understand application behavior, modify Java code, design meaningful telemetry, write PromQL, build Grafana dashboards, and troubleshoot distributed systems in production.

Skills and Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software-development experience using Java.

• Strong hands-on experience developing enterprise applications or microservices using Java and Spring Boot.

• Demonstrated ability to modify application code, write automated tests, submit pull requests, and support changes through production deployment.

• Hands-on experience instrumenting Java applications using Micrometer, Spring Boot Actuator, Prometheus client libraries, OpenTelemetry, or similar technologies.

• Hands-on production experience configuring applications to expose metrics to Prometheus.

• Strong experience writing and troubleshooting PromQL.

• Hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining Grafana dashboards.

• Experience developing Grafana dashboards using variables, transformations, drilldowns, data links, annotations, and reusable templates.

• Experience creating or maintaining Prometheus recording rules and alerting rules.

• Experience with distributed applications, microservices, REST APIs, asynchronous processing, and event driven architectures.

• Experience with Git, pull requests, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.

• Experience troubleshooting production systems using metrics, logs, traces, and application diagnostics.

• Understanding of SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, golden signals, alert design, incident response, and root-cause analysis.

• Understanding of metric design, including counters, gauges, timers, histograms, labels, and cardinality.

• Experience monitoring or troubleshooting applications that interact with enterprise databases.

• Experience with Kafka or another enterprise event-streaming platform.

• Experience monitoring Kafka producers, consumers, consumer lag, message throughput, processing failures, and end-to-end event flows.

• Experience with Looker or another enterprise business-intelligence and analytics platform.

• Experience with OpenTelemetry SDKs, collectors, OTLP, distributed tracing, and metric-log-trace correlation.

• Experience with Grafana provisioning, dashboard JSON, APIs, or dashboard-as-code practices.

• Experience with Oracle, PostgreSQL, cloud-managed databases, NoSQL databases, or database-monitoring platforms.

• Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, or containerized application environments.

• Experience monitoring batch jobs, scheduled processes, Airflow workflows, Spark jobs, or data pipelines.

• Experience using StatsD, Prometheus exporters, Pushgateway, remote-write architectures, or enterprise telemetry platforms.

• Experience with Google Cloud Platform and services such as Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, Cloud Trace, or Error Reporting.

• Experience developing reusable Spring Boot starters, shared libraries, internal frameworks, or developer platform tooling.

• Experience with Python, Go, Bash, or JavaScript for automation and integration work.
