Full job description
Summary:
The Accounting Manager is responsible for leading the accounting operations team, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grain procurement, as well as the Senior Accountant and the month-end close and general ledger processes. The role will ensure the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger while supporting insurance, tax, and audit activities. The Accounting Manager will also lead technology-enabled process improvement, advancing the function from transactional accounting toward exception-based analytical review and general ledger automation.
Primary Duties:
-
Accounting Operations Leadership
-
Lead the combined accounting operations team spanning accounts payable, accounts receivable and collections, and grain procurement accounting, along with the Senior Accountant
-
Set service levels, performance metrics, and cross-training across the transactional teams so that work is balanced, backed up, and measurable
-
Provide the team with leadership, coaching, training, and development opportunities, and build bench strength within the accounting function
-
Partner with grain origination, operations, and commercial teams to ensure contracts, settlements, and grain payables are recorded accurately and settled on time
-
Serve as the escalation point for vendor, customer, and producer issues the team cannot resolve
-
Month-End Close and General Ledger
-
Manage the monthly financial close, ensuring all costs incurred are properly recorded, and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, and reporting packages
-
Reconcile sub-ledgers to the general ledger, resolve differences, and own key balance sheet reconciliations each month
-
Oversee daily bank and credit card reconciliation, cash disbursement requests, and periodic cash forecasting
-
Support preparation of quarter-end and year-end financial statements and maintain the close calendar
-
Shorten the close cycle without sacrificing accuracy, tracking cycle time and reconciliation quality as standing measures of the function's health
-
Process Improvement and Technology
-
Lead technology-enabled process improvement projects across the accounting function, from opportunity identification through design, testing, implementation, and adoption
-
Move routine transactional review toward an exception-based model, designing the tolerances, thresholds, and alerts that direct the team's attention to what is genuinely unusual
-
Drive general ledger automation, including recurring and systematic journal entries, automated reconciliation matching, and the elimination of manual spreadsheet handoffs
-
Expand the use of Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power BI, partnering with internal stakeholders to replace manual reporting with self-service dashboards
-
Develop and document business processes and accounting policies, keeping documentation current as processes change
-
Evaluate emerging finance and accounting technology, including automation and AI-assisted tools, and bring practical recommendations to Finance leadership
-
Controls, Audit, Tax, and Insurance
-
Enhance and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate risk
-
Collaborate with internal and external auditors to support timely completion of audit processes
-
Assist with state, local, and federal tax filings for US entities
-
Prepare yearly insurance renewal documentation and support the risk management process
Qualifications:

-
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least one year leading, supervising, or mentoring others
