Job Title: Safety Manager

Job Description

The Safety Manager serves as the designated Site Safety Manager on projects requiring New York City Department of Buildings (NYC DOB) Site Safety oversight. This role develops, implements, and maintains comprehensive Site Safety Plans while leading all project safety activities and field safety personnel. The Safety Manager ensures full compliance with OSHA regulations, NYC DOB Chapter 33 requirements, and client-specific safety programs, and plays a key role in incident prevention, investigation, and continuous improvement. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex, high-profile construction projects and to make a direct impact on worker safety, project performance, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated Site Safety Manager on projects requiring NYC DOB Site Safety oversight.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Site Safety Plans for assigned projects.

  • Direct and oversee all project safety activities and field safety personnel, including safety coordinators and site safety staff.

  • Conduct routine safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and verify compliance.

  • Lead incident investigations and perform root cause analyses to prevent recurrence.

  • Interface directly with owners, construction managers, general contractors, and regulatory agencies to coordinate safety requirements and expectations.

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, NYC DOB Chapter 33 requirements, and client-specific safety programs.

  • Review and approve plans for fall protection, crane operations, excavation, confined space entry, and other high-risk activities.

  • Monitor corrective actions, verify implementation, and ensure timely resolution of identified hazards.

  • Prepare, maintain, and organize reports, safety metrics, and compliance documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Support business development efforts by participating in client meetings, safety presentations, and preconstruction planning sessions.

  • Drive site-wide safety performance by promoting a strong safety culture, coaching field personnel, and reinforcing best practices.

  • Manage multiple project sites as needed, ensuring consistent application of safety standards and procedures.

Essential Skills

  • Active NYC DOB Site Safety Manager License.

  • Demonstrated experience serving as a designated Site Safety Manager on projects requiring NYC DOB oversight.

  • Strong background in construction safety, including site safety management and safety training.

  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and NYC DOB Chapter 33 requirements.

  • Proven ability to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Site Safety Plans.

  • Experience leading all site safety activities and overseeing safety staff on construction projects.

  • Hands-on experience conducting safety audits, inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.

  • Ability to review and evaluate high-risk work such as crane operations, excavation, confined space activities, and fall protection systems.

  • Effective communication skills to interface with owners, construction managers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Strong organizational skills for managing corrective actions, tracking safety performance, and maintaining documentation.

  • First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Experience working on projects exceeding $50M in construction value.

  • Experience managing safety across multiple project sites simultaneously.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Professional safety credentials such as CHST, CSP, ASP, or equivalent certifications.

  • Experience working within a specialized construction safety organization or similar environment.

  • Comfort presenting safety programs and metrics in client meetings and formal presentations.

  • Ability to build strong partnerships with major owners, developers, contractors, and construction managers.

  • Interest in long-term career growth in advanced safety management and complex project environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and promote a proactive safety culture on large construction sites.

Work Environment

This is an on-site role based at active construction projects. The Safety Manager spends the majority of time in the field, working closely with construction teams, site supervisors, and safety personnel to oversee day-to-day operations. The environment involves large, complex projects with significant coordination among multiple stakeholders and high-risk activities such as crane operations, excavation, confined space work, and work at height. The role requires regular site walks, inspections, and face-to-face interaction with project teams and regulatory representatives. The position offers exposure to advanced safety management practices on high-profile projects and provides opportunities to collaborate with major owners, developers, contractors, and construction managers in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New York, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $65.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
