Scope of Job

Responsible for managing the strategy and production of web content for the university, ensuring that all web materials are compelling, accurate, and optimized to support UTRGV’s strategic goals (marketing, recruitment, public information). To oversee the planning, creation, and maintenance of high-impact web content while exercising independent judgment in governing content quality and consistency across the institution’s websites.

Description of Duties

  • Develops, leads, and maintains a strategic content plan for university websites, including key pages, campaign landing pages, student recruitment content, public information pages, and institutional priority initiatives.

  • Manages advanced web content creation for major institutional initiatives, coordinating and managing the development of critical web content pieces that support leadership’s goals and campaigns. Exercises independent judgment in content decisions to maintain a high standard of quality and relevance.

  • Provides strategic content leadership to shape content that advances major institutional initiatives and enhances the user experience.

  • Works with university leadership and key departmental stakeholders to identify content needs and update web pages, ensuring that information is up-to-date, engaging, and aligned with strategic objectives.

  • Provides expertise in crafting messages that speak to target audiences (prospective students, current students, community, etc.).

  • Supervises and mentors web content contributors and other assigned staff by assigning tasks and providing guidance on best practices in web writing, search engine optimization ( SEO ), and usability.

  • Ensures consistency in style and adherence to web content guidelines across different units.

  • Implements SEO and accessibility best practices in all web content, using appropriate keywords, meta descriptions, and accessible formats (headings, alt tags, transcripts) to improve search rankings and ensure compliance with ADA and university standards.

  • Reviews and edits significant content updates and new content submissions from various departments, exercising editorial oversight and full publishing authority to approve changes that meet quality and strategic criteria. Has the authority to modify or reject content that does not align with guidelines or goals.

  • Analyzes web content performance using analytics tools (e.g., page views, time on page, search query data) and user feedback to identify opportunities for content improvement and to inform content strategy decisions (data-informed content management).

  • Collaborates closely with the Web Strategy team, marketing strategists, and IT developers to plan and implement content within new web projects or redesigns, ensuring content and technical structure work together for optimal user experience.

  • Stays up-to-date on web content trends, content management system enhancements, and digital storytelling techniques, including multimedia integration, and proactively introduces innovative content approaches that enhance user engagement as part of ongoing digital transformation efforts.

  • Promotes content practices to ensure web content reflects different perspectives and is accessible and understandable to a broad audience.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, English, or a closely related field from an accredited university.

Preferred Education

Master’s degree in Communication, Digital Media, English, or a related field is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred:Professional certifications or training in content strategy, digital marketing, or UX writing (e.g., Content Marketing Certification, Google Analytics Certification) are highly valued.

Required Experience

Four (4) years of experience in web content development, digital communications, or writing/editing for the web, demonstrating progressively responsible experience in managing content and working with content management systems.

Preferred Experience

Experience with enterprise content management systems and large-scale website content governance.

Equipment

Use of standard office equipment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). High digital proficiency, including expertise with content management systems, basic HTML / CSS , SEO principles, and web accessibility software/standards ( WCAG ).

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. Some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Strategic mindset for content planning, capable of aligning web content initiatives with broader university goals and marketing strategies. Excellent project management and organizational skills to handle content calendars, multiple simultaneous updates, and cross-department requests. Superior written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and an understanding of tone and messaging for diverse audiences. Creative and innovative approach to digital storytelling, embracing new formats (video, infographics, interactive media) and tools to enhance web content. Proficiency in data analysis related to content (using web analytics and SEO tools) to guide improvements and demonstrate content ROI .
