Forestry Technician I (Forest Health Internship)

About the Forest Health Internship Program: The Forest Health program surveys for pests, diseases and invasive species that impact the health of our forests. We also educate the public about identifying and managing these pests, diseases and invasive species. In some cases, we will apply management measures to mitigate the impacts of these organisms. Examples of our work include surveying for and treating hemlock trees infested with hemlock woolly adelgid, mapping emerald ash borer damage and ash health and helping conduct outreach field days to educate the public on invasive species. **THERE ARE TWO POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN PICKENS/OCONEE AND TWO POSITIONS AVAILABLE IN RICHLAND COUNTY IN SUMMER 2027. **

The Responsibilities of the Forest Health Intern: To facilitate and conduct surveys for invasive species and to apply management where warranted. Record geographic and/or temporal trends of invasive species. Survey for invasive species and map their occurrence. Perform control and/or management of invasive species. Attend events to educate the public on identification and management of invasive species.

• A high school diploma and relevant experience (preference for experience with GIS and Excel).

• Criminal background check and alcohol and drug test are required.

• Must possess a valid driver's license (Class D).

• The Forestry Commission Forest Health program works a five-day, 37.5-hour week. Normal work hours are 8:00AM-4:00PM, Monday-Friday.

• Must be able to lift, walk, squat, and carry objects up to 50 lbs.

• Must have working knowledge of life sciences (biology, et al.).

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions.

• This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace policy and procedure. This position is designated as safety sensitive.
