Metal Prep Technician – TFC Division

Location: Colorado Springs, CO

Skyline Products is a leading manufacturer of electronic price signs and transportation systems based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We are a team of collaborative innovators dedicated to designing and manufacturing the industry's highest-quality signage and software solutions.

Job Summary:

The Metal Prep Technician operates shop cutting, CNC equipment and grinding equipment to prepare raw metal materials (steel, aluminum, stainless steel) according to blueprints, work orders, and shop specifications. This role ensures accurate sizing and clean edges before materials move to welding or assembly.

Job Type: Full-time

DAY SHIFT: 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday.

Compensation for this position is $20.00 - $24.00 an hour.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Shop Safety & Maintenance: Maintain a clean work area, perform daily safety checks on tools, and follow all OSHA and internal shop safety guidelines.

  • Read Blueprints & Measurements: Interpret basic shop drawings, cut sheets, and work orders, using a tape measure, square, and calipers with high precision.

  • Operate Cutting Equipment: Set up and operate shop saws (band saws, chop saws), shears, plasma cutters, or CNC cutters to dimension raw stock.

  • Material Preparation & Deburring: Grind, deburr, and clean-cut edges using angle grinders, sanders, or wire wheels to remove sharp burrs and slag.

  • Material Handling: Sort, stack, tag, and move raw materials and cut parts using overhead cranes, forklifts, or manual carts.

  • Quality Control: Check dimensions of cut parts against drawings and inspect material for surface defects before routing to the weld or assembly floor.

Requirements:

  • Experience: 0–2 years working in a manufacturing, warehouse, or metal shop environment.

  • Math & Measuring: Proven ability to read a tape measure down to 1/16" or 1/32" and basic shop math skills. Strong understanding of fractions, decimals, and basic geometry for accurate layout work.

  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret welding symbols, dimensions, and cut lists.

  • Tool Proficiency: Experience with hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.

  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy materials (often up to 50 lbs.), and work in a noisy, fast-paced industrial environment.

  • Safety Gear: Willingness to wear PPE (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, earplugs, welding/leather sleeves as needed).

Regularly performs physically demanding tasks that require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and moving materials weighing 50 to 100 pounds or more, including lifting items from ground level to waist height and overhead. Must be able to safely handle heavy materials throughout the workday while following established safety procedures.
